In photoshop, have you ever used gaussian blur? anti-aliased anything... reduced a large image....??

It actually is just one imported .gif image with a transparent BG and motion tweened in a clip. It's actual size is 71 X 100px.

arh yes you have me sold that it was done with photoshop, except that its damn tricky to make it look that good, ive spent the last hour and a half trying all different ways to make the flame look convincing, and i just cant, look at my attempt!

The flame clip is being shape tweened over a 12 frame length.
It's not only the flame that you must work on - its the tweening of the image to get the flicker effect.

how do you know all this - very cleaver!

ok im starting to see whats going on here, except i cant seem to shape tween the bitmap, ive broken it apart (as you cant shape tween a symbol), ive even practiced shape tweening really simple objects and it works fine, yet i cant seem to shape tween this bitmap?

also i didnt quite get what u meant by ......It's not only the flame that you must work on - its the tweening of the image to get the flicker effect.....arent the flame and the image the same thing?

    Thanks.

Scrap the shape tween and make a bunch of keyframes and work your way through each one using the free transform tool on the image to animate the flame

ok ive given that a go and yeah again it just doesnt look like a natural flame, maybe it was done in 3d max? im just unconvinced you can make a flame look that smooth using the tools in flash.

There's plenty of techniques to get great results in photoshop.
Remember that the default pixel resolution for images is 72. There's nothing stopping you from building the flame in a 512px square image at a resolution of 300 and then reducing the image to 100px. The quality will be excellent. It's how I make all my buttons and graphics to achieve smooth edges and clear results.
Theres nothing magical or difficult about reproducing that flame.
