What happens if I press both shift keys?

try the holding ALT and typing three numbers on your numpad, gives the character map of whatever font you're using.

well actually, in word, its used as a sortcut between wanting a special character, and getting one.
oh, and I_am_Tarzan, it probaly depends on ur hardware 'n' software.

yes, computers OS also determins what kind of keys you are able to press with simultaneous shift pressing. Mine is as follows:

Also pressing 4 numbers on your number pad gives special characters such as:

• ½
• ¾
• ç
• ð

and ALT 5412 is the same as paste (CTRL V)

actually you are hitting shift+insert. Which of course ia the paste part of crtl+insert. If you look at the numpad, 0 also is insert, provided the nbum lock is turned off.
