HELP!....buttons

ok, im new to flash, i have flash mx, i cannot figure out how to create a working button from scratch. i use photoshop a lot and i cant get any response from the buttons. its probably something with the action script or something, but the mx tutorials are crap, and i cant find any tuts online that just let me create a simple damn button
