ok, the battery dies permenantly at 1.5 years time, and the cost to install a new battery is $250ish (about the cost of the ipod)
That's what I hear anyway....

There is a famed case of a battery dying after 18 months. Apple instituted a $99 battery replacement program after all the hoopla. There's also a $60 extended warranty. You can change the battery yourself, but it's difficult to do without damaging the case.

This does not mean ALL iPod batteries die after 18 months. Look at the hardware failure rate in corporate desktop PC's, it's no better.

100 bucks? Still quite expensive for a replacement of a part of a broken product. Does apple constitute some sort of a default warranty anyway?

If it breaks out of warranty, they have an obligation to provide low-cost repairs?
1 year warranty that covers everything. After that you're on your own. Seems fair to me.

10 G one doesn't come with a dock, just a cable. Dock is $40. For another $100 you could get a 20G with a dock. Call Santa, quick!

That was more of a question, that an arguable statement, palex.
I was asking about the warranty in that question more than really anything.

The other day, I bought a box of animal crackers. On the side, it said "Do Not Eat if Seal is Broken". I opened the box and sure enough...

Thnx good info there.
The iPod will begin to go through a disk scan. At the end you will be presented with a Disk icon with a check mark or a sad iPod icon. If you get a sad iPod icon you need to send your iPod in for repair.
he he thats just too funny.

If you're talking bang for your buck it's not. You don't need a dock, but if it costs $40 and you want one, you might as well shell out another $100, get the dock, and double the capacity of the iPod.
I keep my dock hooked up to my stereo because it has a line level out mini-jack.
