[disc] platformer character animation
I saw something really cool recently. I cant show it to you as it was done by a well known guy.
When doing your pixel art for game characters, you typically draw each frame of the animation (running, jumping, dying etc).
This system, the body was split into head, body, feet and hands. They weren't connected, just seperate graphics. The animations were scripted, so you would store the x,y point for each part of the body and an array of points.
Does that make sense?
This enabled loads and loads of animations with no adding to the filesize, plus an animation editor allowed you to make a sequence, by dragging body parts around and it recorded the positions.
Has anyone on here done anything like that before?

Yes we can
yes,but what´s the point of starting a thread on a topic, telling about something but then not showing it?
come on,give us a link, some more info or at least some screenshots =)
is that thingy for creating 3d caharacters and allows texturing/animating them or is it 2d?

seriously, I can't. You wouldnt post up games under dev you've seen would you?
What else do you want to know? Hopefully i explained it ok.
no, it was 2d pixel sprites in a cool platformer. just imagine a head, hands and feet not attached to the body physicaly, but moving the position of each part in code.

Nice idea, never knowingly seen it done... it would probably suit a rayman type character really well (where the feet and hands arent attached to the body by limbs).
Is that what the charcter is like in this game you are talking about?

ok,well, you could at least tell us who made it/is working on it.
andries odendaal was already working on such inverse kinematics for 2d games years ago,but he only had a toy demo, which couldn´t save the created animations.
blink made a 3d animation ed for a game of ours once, you could drag prerendered swift objects plotted together around to create (for example) leg animations of mechs.
todd yard has also created similar animators years ago, check out hios page:
www.27bobs.com then click on downloads and there you can find several such animators under the section smart clips.
blink´s and todd´s animators where based on dragging parts around which where connected to each other, there were no physics/inverse kinematics in those, whereas andrie´s ed featured a full blown reaction system.
personally i´m not convinced that such systems make much sense for 2d characters as you would recognise that only parts are dragged around quite quickly (imho).
being able to animate 3d characters like that would be quite cool though.

Thats the idea, not inverse kinematics and stuff. Wouldn't really suit characters that actually had to have arms and legs (as apposed to just feet and hands)

I have tried animating chars that way, but I must say the movement doesnt end up being as nice as with drawing each frame separately.
