Beginner's question

I have a beginner's question, and I am not sure this is the place to post. I have never done any kind of form and now I want to make a guestbook. My host has some scripts installed like "Advanced Guestbook" that with a few clicks I had a guestbook. The problem was that it looked boring and when I tried to play with the code, I realized I knew nothing about php and mysql and everything else to do with forms. So I am looking for a good place to start learning about this stuff.
