    Graphic Design Artists?

I am currently takeing a course titled "History of Design"

So I have an essay to do about:

    - Pick one major work by one artist in the context of communication/graphic design
    - Must be during Second half of 19C to early 20C
    - Discuss:
    - how it represents the artist’s unique style
    - how it is innovative in its time

So it has to be about communicatin/graphic design and NOT fine art. I guess graphic design can be classified as something mass produced, used for business purposes, etc.

Anyone have any idea??? For example, war posters (during world war 1 and 2), those can be classifed as Graphic Design. Anyone know any particular works that stand out or an artist.

    Help would be appreciated,

    thanx!!!!!!

    mojo..

Al Hirshfeld, I love his style, and there's never been anyone like him.

You could go with any turn-of-the-century type designer, like W.A. Dwiggins's Electra.

Also, check out the book "Graphic Design in the 20th Century" by Alston W. Purvis and Martijn F. Le Coultre (ISBN 90-6369-051-7), which contains a fair few of the covers for the magazine "Wendingen", an early twentieth century Dutch magazine about graphic design, architecture and typography.
    hello.

klimt, schiele, toulouse lautrec. all of those have pretty nice typographies and posters.

i'm currently loving klimt's posters. there are some that could perfectly fit into year 2000, and they are from the 1900's

If it was me I'd do something about record covers. Something like tracing an artist (musical) through the ages based on their cover artwork and graphics.

The Beatles and Radiohead spring to mind.

That said, tayjax's idea of the Channel 4 logo is a good 'un.

BBC2 has had some major (and pretty comparable) transitions, too.

Er, that's still pretty Uk specific though, isn't it?

    Ah well!

    Whoops! You're right!

As usual, there's always someone more observant than me around. In my defence, I was spurred on by the mention of Channel 4.

To my knowledge, Channel 4 didn't exist 'til the 1980s.

    So ner.
