Post Your Image Application Tips Here

OK, so you have a tip for Photoshop that you would like to share with everyone else here. What better than to post that tip here, huh?

I started this thread because I believe that there are ways to do things in Fireworks, Photoshop, etc. that will make life easier for all. Please feel free to post any tips you may have here.

photoshop shortcuts i use now that i didn't when i started:
    - shift + dragging something will move and object in a straight line.
    - ctrl + clicking a layer selects that layer.
    - alt + click/drag will duplicate and move a layer.
    - ctrl + d will remove a selection.
    - ctrl + m will open curves dialog.
    - ctrl + l will open levels dialog.
    - press tab to hide/show all your palettes. handy!

Ah, these boys is all swelled up. So this was earlier...getting set to trade. Then, woooaaah differences.

Converting BMP files to JPG format

If you have an image that you created in another program but that program will only let you save files as BMP format, here's what you can do:

In Fireworks, open the particular BMP you want to save in JPG format. Then, using either the Export Wizard or just the Export dialog(it doesn't matter what you use), export the BMP file as a JPG photo.

    PHOTOSHOP

If you're on a Windows OS, then instead of Clicking:
    File/Open or ctrl+o

Double-click (left mouse btn) in the grey area and it'll bring up the same Open dialog

    Ctrl+n : new doc
    ctrl+shift+n : new layer
    ctrl+[ : move layer down
    ctrl+] : move layer up
alt+[ : moves down the layer list (ie it selects the layer below current)
alt+] : moves up the layer list (ie it selects the layer above current)
alt+backspace/delete : fills current layer with foreground colour
ctrl+backspace/dete : fills current layer with background colour

    ctrl+~ : RGB channel
    ctrl+1 : Red channel
    ctrl+2 : Green channel
    ctrl+3 : Blue channel

    d : resets your colours to B+W
x : swaps colours around (ie, you have it currently at B+W, then pressing x will make it W+B

With the paint brush, pencil, eraser etc:
    [ : decrease brush size
    ] : increase brush size
    shift+[ : soften brush size
    shift+] : harden brsuh size

With certain tools selected that have more than one option (ie Marquee tool isn't only square; It's got a circular one as well), press:
Shift+(key board letter of that tool) : this cycles through the other tools available for the particular tool

eg: m - current marquee (usually square)
    shift+m - circular marquee

    Ctrl+U : hue/saturation
    ctrl+l : levels
    ctrl+m : curves

Got more than one file open in Photoshop.. cycle through the files open using:
    Ctrl + Tab

These are all the ones I use regularly and not something out of the book that I've pasted. I think they're useful.

    ctrl+h hides and unhides selection

the history panel is quite useful aswell, to increase the number of steps that ps stores goto edit>preference>general>history states (i have 40)

also, in the history panel, the first button will duplicate the current document as it is. If you like what you are doing in photoshop, but still think you can improve it, you may also take a snapshop (second button in the history panel). so you can always go back to that state of your pic you liked.

and well, actions, another beautifull thing in ps, just like macros in excel, they'll help you store usual steps you have when using photoshop (like creating a 5 pixel rectangle, or duplicate layer then blur it then change its blending mode)

    Fireworks Animations

When exporting any animation that you do to SWF format, make sure to click on the Options button. From there, you will see a dialog box titled Macromedia Flash SWF Export Options

    You should see these options:

    Objects
    • Maintain Paths
    • Maintain Appearance

    Text
    • Maintain Editability
    • Convert To Paths

Since you will most likely not be doing any further editing of the animation in Flash, make sure that Maintain Appearance and Convert To Paths are both selected
