Very New User To Flash Here, Can Anyone Help Me?

Hi, I'm a fairly new user to flash and have to make a website for a project I'm doing at university. I was wondering if anyone could help me as the help tutorials on this website get slightly too graphic for me being a new user. I wish to do the intro movie and want to be able to make certain images fade in and out accordingly. Is there anyone who knows how to do this? Also how do I create a colour gradient? Can anyone help? It would be much appreciated, thanks
