Hey folks.
I have an idea for a free-for-all flashkit battle, and by the time we've finished, I'm hoping to end up with a huge mural image that we can all admire... and have some fun making it to. But I need to know if I can get enough takers before going ahead, because the more people we get, the better this is going to look.
What you see here is a 100 by 300 pixel piece of a 600 by 300 image. You're not supposed to see the rest of the image, and try and imagine what it looks like, and continue it. like this...
This continues until we have a long canvas that all links together.
How its going to work is:
1) A user claims that he will do the next volley (this prevents two people doing it at once)
2) The user makes a 600x300 image, that continues from the 100px image that is provided.
3) The user submits an image that shows 100px of the right side of his volley.
4) The user emails me his 600px image (saves us from complications such as users leaving half way thru etc and not uploading their piece.)
If anyone has trouble understanding the concept, or thinks that it wont work, just drop a message. And if anyone wants to start, lets do this thang!
EDIT: UPDATED/BETTER EXPLAINED RULES.
READ THIS IF YOU ARE UNSURE.
The diagram (although crude) should give users some idea of what to do alone. But if you are still cloudy on things like directions and image sizes, you should keep reading.
1) When you look at a 100px wide volley on the forum, it will be the users RIGHT (as apposed to left) side of their complete volley. A user wishing to continue it should know that it would begin on the LEFT, and should end in the RIGHT. (as shown in the diagram)
2) Your 600px image should contain nothing but your own work. If it contains the previous volley inside your full image then its likely going to turn out to have 500px of your own work.
And this will probably be the most helpful:
3) Once again: Ideally, a user wishing to return a volley, should make a new 700px wide image, put the previous volley on the LEFT side of his image, and continue from there. Once finished, should remove the previous volley from his/her own volley, and submit the last 100px of the RIGHT side of their volley. (And mail the full 600px image to myself.

Some additional ground rules/advice for making this thing run smoothly.
1) Dont forget, only submit 100 pixels of the RIGHT (as apposed to left) side of the image.
2) Dont include the previous volley in your own. You are only supposed to continue from it. Users may find it easier to start with a 700px wide image, paste the last volley onto the left hand side, and continue it from there, and when they finish, cut the starter-volley out of their own volley.
3) To help other users, and to make things more fun, try and keep the right side of your image fairly clean and simple. Dont make it too hard for someone to continue onto. Try to keep your right side of the image as vector-ish as possible, and avoid making users try to continue your image with a photo or something.
4) Dont be afraid to be adventurous and change the style around. Be crazy and abstract. You may even want to change styles multiple times within your own volley.
5) Finally (and obviously) no offencive content in your volley... nudity, swearing, and strong offence.

One more thing. That purple impage IS actually my starting volley. So if we have any takers on the first part, we are ready to start!

Theres 2 ways we can do it. We can:
A) Not reaveal the final of all the images until the end. or,
B) Reveal the image after someone is a volley in front. for example, If I put up my 100px strip, and someone does a volley of that, then I can put up my whole image (but not the one the next person completed... until the person in front of him completes theirs... etc)
personally i'd prefer A... its more mysterious that way
does anyone want to go first?

For future reference... if you don't have paid for hosting, please just attach your images.
One of the mods will host it for you.
I'm hosting more and more per year, yet I don't receive a penny for any of it. Getting expensive on some images that are referenced in more than one place.

Gerbick, you didnt have to bother. I asked 'would you mind' and you obviously do. I'll link it back to geocities...
And I normally would attach my images but in a situation where im trying to explain the way the roll-canvas works, I want it to be easy to follow and all on the screen at once... so people arnt sorting through windows and such just to figure it out.

its anyones turn whenever someone calls for it. the good thing about this is we can continously get new players for it, even in the middle of the process.

i've hosted for people i've battled with.
i think the battle is so much cooler when all the images are actually displyed.
also, note that this is a little different than a mural battle because of the secrecy.
a real mural battle would be cool too...

I'm up to over 72 images for 2004 alone. I have no probs with hosting other images.
All I was trying to say was that if it's attached in the thread, I can download it quicker than edit a thread, then copy/paste the image URL into the browser, then download that way.
And if I see an attachment, I'll automatically grab it and host it.
That's all I was saying.
