    This is assuming that you have 3ds max. download SimCloth, and follow this tutorial...

    You could use some of the modifiers within 3ds max, but since you're looking for a tutorial, that's the quickest I could find without getting into a 3 page explanation.

    Good luck

    With Swift3D? If you had v4, you could look into making either a plane - easier - or a very thin extruded rectangle - you'd have to use two sets of points to move around and keep track of, thus harder/more time consuming - and then start with upping the amount of segments to at least 64.

    then enter into advanced modeler, and basically start to move the points around in 3D to simulate folding and moving.

    Sounds simple, but a bit time consuming since it's per frame.

    I'm sure some of the other 3D gurus would have other techniques.

    I'll do you this...

    I'll delete the one there, move this one, and it'll all be just fine.

    I'll gladly move it, and honestly, I know guys like Rushvision and BlinkOK probably have some ultra-cool way of tackling this.

    Those guys are friggin' gurus within Swift3D/3D.

    this is a flag anim created with the lathe editor. it's not perfect it's a realy pain to map a bitmap to it but if you're lookin for a plain flag flappin in the wind then it should do the job;

    You might want to set the gravity either lower (default = 500) or to zero. It will be near impossible to loop.

    Blink, that's awesome.

    open up the simcloth3 examples, and the one with the flag, see it?

    now, select the flag, then open up the materials. then via the maps properties, you can add a bitmap texture to the flag.

    render out to - I have the Swift3D MAX plugin - a movie, if you have the ability to render out to *.swf, and you're done.

    I have an example I just did in like 2 minutes... but it's about 1.54mb at 800x600 for 100 frames. I could trim it down perhaps.

    i'm sure i tried this before and had no luck.
    anyway, just because i'm anal, i plopped an image onto the lathe and walah! it lined right up (kinna).
    anyway here it is;
    (sorry the .gif might take time to load. it's 56k)

    http://users.nlc.net.au/oceana/flag.zip
    The .zip includes a .fla containing the pattern for the flag (coz i'm sure i got the number of stars and stripes wrong)
    ps: god bless america

    if you have version 4, you might want to update via the Customer Only site.

    And saving to version 3... that'll be an impossible thing.

    ok... here's me using SimCloth3 and texturing.

    I used this image:

    and quickly - with no regards to lighting nor the specular nor self-illumination - and came up with this:

    http://www.gorillafarm.net/tutorial/flag2.swf

    mind you, it's a 1.58mb file without a pre-loader.
