    San Francisco

    Hi all!

I'm taking a very spur of the moment trip to San Francisco with my sister in-law. Leaving tomorrow. I found some good rates on hotels, but I've never been there so I'm not to sure what the areas are like that these hotels are in. Most of the less expensive ones are in Burlingame or Oyster Point. Does anyone know if these are OK areas, or should I be looking elsewhere.

Yeah, I would stay on the Napa side of the bay and BART into SF. Plus you can get in some GREAT wine tasting.

    Have fun!!

Def. rent bikes and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. My girlfriend and I were there in Sept 04 and it's one of the best long weekends I've had anywhere. Riding across the bridge to Sausalito was simply breathtaking. Standing in the middle of the bridge, looking out at the ocean, down at the water churning below, to think you're riding a bicycle across such a world known landmark was awesome.

We stayed very close to Yurba Buena gardens, close to the Powell Street cable car turnaround. It's just about to the edge of the Tenderloin, along Market Street. Good location by bus to get to Haight-Ashbury area if you so choose. If are into shopping and spending a few $$ for fashion's sake, you can literally go nuts there.

Lots of walking will wear you out, especially up and down all the hills. Twice we walked across town, through ChinaTown to the piers. Near the Hooters that is close to Pier 39 is where we rented bicycles.

We also walked up what must have been 10,000 stairs to get to Coit Tower, a beautiful view of the city and bay.

Have a great time, I would go back there in a second. Wonderful city, we had a blast.

SF is one of the greatest cities to visit in the world. DO NOT screw up your vacation by trying to save a few bucks. staying in oakland or any other area within cab distance just will not cut it. that would be like visiting NYC but staying in 'boken (sorry paul) - it's just wrong. you get what you pay for, and the last thing you want to skimp on are your memories...

Ah, these boys is all swelled up. So this was earlier...getting set to trade. Then, woooaaah differences.

totally agree nordberg, just forgot to say that. Stay in the heart of it all. We only took buses and the cable cars at night to get back from near the Piers.

We look at Manhattan, Manhattan looks at us. Who has the better view?

I look up...not west. Sorry. My view is better.

Incidentally, what do YOU get when you look west? Jersey City is a fine site this time of year, huh?

Agreed...stay in SF. You are paying to go there...not to Oakland.

Um, Napa is about 45 miles north of San Francisco, and probably 30 or so miles from the closest BART station.

Although there are people who do commute that far…

Burlingame and San Matao are still not really in the city proper, I would say stay in union square or fishermans warf. You can find a place down there for about 60-80 bucks a night. Don't stay on Mission St or anywhere right off Market St.
and you can get across town in a cab for about 10 bucks.
this ones not so bad link. Good location and fairly cheap

Have fun! SF is my home town and I love it beyond words!

Ouch. I used to to Oakland to Palo Alto. That was no fun, but Napa to SF. That's just painful.

    Never again.
