Looking for Cool Sites Under 20k
Anyone know of some cool sites that were made for around 20k (USD)?
Thx,
Mow

And how the heck would we know this information? Who discloses how much a website was done for? I do not think this is common knowledge you are asking for.

B/C there are a lot of designs that are active on this board & if they so choose, they could reference sites they have done that were in the 20k ballpark. Simple. Man, I get so tired of people who flame over anything.

I'm not sure if he meant to flame, but I think what he was trying to say is that it's very unlikely someone would disclose a site they worked on and how much they got paid for it. It's kind of like talking about your salary and comparing it with your co-workers in the office place ... BIG no no.

I thought he meant 20KB

Yeah I wasn't flaming. Your question just seems kinda odd. I can't think of an analogy at the moment but as villain2 said, it's sorta like talking about your salary and comparing it with your co-workers. I would never disclose that type of information. That's just between my client and I to know.

well.. the BBC website (www.bbc.co.uk) earnt the company that did it around 3.7 million USD, including the upkeep for either 1 or 2 years (cant remember which, either way is a helluva lot of work)

Well, in that context yes ... it's public record. BBC has investors and public offerings (I believe) so a paper trail is kept, and a website is part of that.
Even still, at the amounts you're discussing, it'd be very rare (and not too smart) for someone to disclose that information. For instance, 2Advanced, Fantasy Interactive and so on are not going to release a press release of their earnings unless they go public ... and that's not going to happen anytime soon (I think).

Although I belive that most websites are like $500US right? 2advanced is the higher end, probably $1500 or something. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Very off ... look at the projects from major companies like Ford and so on ... you're talking upwards of $10,000 perhaps. They're doing more than just presenting a flash movie, there's tracking, branding, customization etc. involved.
Lord knows how much money FI gets from constantly running, upgrading, enhancing, redesigning various parts of Road Runner, let alone how complicated the application is anyway (parsing xml, using javascript and cold fusion to determine content based on region, databases, video compression etc.)
You're talking serious money when you look into those portfolios. Even for something as simple as the weather system on rr.com (it is simple but there is a bit of action scripting you need to do for a search by name), you're still talking big bucks.

Price varies a lot for projects, it's impossible to estimate. I know sites that have been lauded in this forum from well-known designers that they were paid less than $1500 for, and I know perfectly average sites that have been ignored by this forum that cost well over $50k.
Pretty much any dynamic major company site will have cost more than $20k (unless they're film sites which are notoriously cheap), they pay that much for peace of mind as much as an experienced competent company. Anything to do with an institution such as a government ministry will have probably cost several times what it's worth, again, they pay more because they need accountability and peace of mind, and vendors need contract insurance, which is expensive.

Gotcha. So it's similar to the company I'm working for during the summer. We want to buy a ~$15k server, but we have to buy it from our specified dealers, and they will charge us ~$250k for the same piece of equipment.
*sighs* Such stupidity.
