Phantom Flasher...
Broken iBook
So... you kids keep going on about how great these mac things are...
I have the chance to purchase a "broken" ibook, its that little white girly one...
It starts, but then just sits there, apparently, then turns itself off after about five minutes.
Is it worth buying and trying to repair it?

A problem with the harddrive maybe. Do you hear the disks head moving?

I haven't seen the machine yet, so I can't say... I'll go take a look next week.
Anything I should look out for in particular?

If you can't fix it.
Take it apart and mod it into a PC.

Check the fan, or the fan connections. If the CPU is too hot, it shuts down, no? If not, could be a bad mobo too.

Yup, I'm thinking of the mod thing too! Thing is... the idiot I'm buying it from has no idea of even if its 12" 15" or 17"!!!
If its the motherboard, then I don't think I'll bother as it'll be expensive to fix! Boooo!
What do I need to check that it has, or doesn't etc?

iBooks come in 12" and 14" - both 1024x768. It's hard to tell

dude, don't buy it. my iBook died after finally being dropped, and the motherboard was friggin' expensive enough for me to consider buying a new one.
not unless the bloke has AppleCare, transfers it to you... then it's like 75.00 USD to get it fix. Convert that to whatever you Brits use to barter... Oats or stones, or something, right?
I don't think it's worth it. Sounds like a messed up mobo... and with no idea of which processor is in it - I had an all-white G3... Photoshop was "doable"... but frustratingly slow. The newer G4 iBook are ok, but with problems like that... avoid.

Thanks Gerbs... I thought that would be the case... but for £50 its cheap enough to hold my interest, even if its just to tinker with... Although, if it is the MOBO then I'll probably leave it...
Is there a Knoppix for Macs I could take and see if it'd boot? That way I could see if its an HD problem or not
Thanks for the info chaps!

There is a Ubuntu Live CD for PowerPC.
There's also a Kubuntu Live CD in case you're a KDE guy.

Thankyou kindly Mister Steves!

?
what are you doing, mark? A guy who just moved to our office has a ibook or something (pretty new by the looks of it) and I am having a nightmare configuring his email to communicate with our mail server.
If you must get it, you can use it as a mouse mat for your PC.

They dont. My girlfriend (i.e. soon to be wife) used to work for MSRC. She practically lived in Microsoft dominated PC's :\
