Or have two competitions going at the same time, one for those who like "true" pixel art and those that use Photoshop. There could be two separate winners.

Fewer colors to work with is more challenging. Try shading something with only only 4 colors versus 256. Here is an example:
12 colors total. Palette was limited to these colors:

Ok Ray Beez.. is more chalanging with 2 colors.. but most of us are not pro's so a say we could make this contest to a acceptable level of difficulty and i mean to 255 colors (gif)

I also agree with PRadvan ... we should participate only with "clean" hand pixels.

Dominicaninja... i think is not a problem to use Photoshop since you are not using rendering functions and tools.

Well I remember people saying something like using the airbrush tool (or other similar tools) in Photoshop automatically makes it not true pixel art. That's why I suggested that.

If you can draw, then there's no challenge without limitations. I guess that's what I'm saying. It's like those programming challenges where you have to squeeze as much as you can into 1kb. I assumed Flashkit had members who could draw more than stick figures.

They were right... you have to calculate each pixel.

I agree with Mr Malee's rules. No color limit means I can make my rainbow stealth mech.
Oh, by the way, love the pixel battle going on. Awesome idea Mr Malee.

Limit the colors or it wont be true pixel art, I say.
16-32 colors is good, not more.

Actually, Ironclaw is right. According to the wikipedia definition of pixel art you are using:
The aspiring pixel artist must remember to keep the color count low; the art is often to be used on systems where the number of available colors is limited, such as older video game consoles or mobile phones. The color constraint is also part of the genre.
So their we go. Case closed. I think we should limit the color to 24 colors. For no reason that I like the number 24 and it is also the name of a show I don't watch, which is isn't really related but, hmm, yeah, 24.
