google is selling 'pi' for $4bn!

Less than a year after its first public shares sale, Google is attempting to add around $4bn to its coffers with a second stock offering.

In making a brief statement of its intentions, the search giant is giving nothing away, beyond stating that the money is earmarked for 'general corporate purposes...and possible acquisitions'. However the size of the offering immediately sparked speculation about what it plans to do with the money.

To add to the air of mystery, the number of shares to be sold, 14,159,265, corresponds with the first eight numbers after the decimal point in the value of pi.
    14159265? nerds!

That all depends. Google has a 35% growth rate and is projected to make 9-10 dollars a share in earnings next year. That is huge.

Since most mutual funds pay twice the growth rate for a stock, meaning they will pay up to 70 times earnings in this case , you could potentially have a $630+ dollar stock in a couple of years. Maybe.

Look at Berkshire Hathaway's stock. It was $200 in 1980, and now it's over 80,000.

Anyways I had 300 dollars in cash lying around in my IRA account so I bought 1 share of google hehe. I plan to keep it for as long as possible to see if it grows.

You have to open up a brokerage account somewhere.

If you want to buy some, just open up an account at Etrade or Scottrade or Ameritrade or one of those places. Can't vouch for any of them, I use Fidelity. You might also need a minimum balance to set up an account.

You also have to take commission into account. I bought 1 share of google at $300, plus $11 commission. So my cost basis is $311. Now the stock is trading at around 280, so I'm already down around 10% LOL. In fact, immediatley after I bought it I was down based on that commission.

You want to talk about a quick and immediate way to permanently destroy the current media market? Google will soon offer high-speed internet FREE! who is not going to take that? They can control on demand TV, movies, etc. Maybe we can put gas in our cars now.

The tipping point is coming, that moment when the critical mass of people with high speed bandwidth and computers capable of dealing with large scale video transfers meets up with the company that can find a way to cheaply deliver that content.

It's already happened with print media. TV and movies are next. This is so exciting. It's no wonder their stock is over $300 a share. It's STILL worth buying...That's how insanely huge this company is going to be. They have been on a major hiring spree lately as well, adding hundreds of new jobs.

It's ok. Power doesn't currupt does it?

Woah woah! Slow down there. Let's not jump to such big conclusions yet.

Basic phone service is as essential as anything and has been around a lot longer than the internet, you don't get that for free.

    Google wants bandwidth for themselves.

Google is preparing for war, with programmers/mathematician polygots as generals and rabid fanboys as zealots in their holy war against the cult of microsoft, the barbarians of yahoo, and the magical entities that dwell within the Amazon.

Ok, a few years from now, when you log onto your Google ISP and open your Google browser, think of this conversation.
