Dammit, I was so convinced Google would use the AIM network, only with Gmail accounts instead of AIM screen names.

I don't really mind - just so long as I can actually use iChat

They'll make a browser version that runs like gaim, faster than any other prog out there, but that scans your every word and serves adverts up on what ever you're talking about... then secretly sends all the info to the US government!

Um...what happens when AOL runs out of money? I've been abusing their 'free' AIM service for (*counts on fingers*) 8 years, first by disabling ads, now by using alternative clients. They've never gotten dime or click-through #1 with me.

They are a big lumbering giant. They have to die eventually, right? They make money on people who don't know better.

They would have been done a long time ago if not for a desperate merger.

I thought all of the Google IM speculation from last year were centered around Jabber anyway... hell, don't blame them. Anybody can setup a Jabber server... easily.

Most of the Google IM stuff I read was about using AIM, as Google already power AOL's searches and AOL would give Google the same deal they gave Apple with iChat. It makes sense really.

Maybe it will tie in with a Google browser too?
