I'm watching streaming news coverage from down around that area and they specifically mentioned the small town i mentioned above...they talked about a hospital that is basically shut down due to broken windows electrical problems and more. God i hope it's not my uncle's hospital.

This is just... appalling. I'm watching the aerial shots on Fox News and the devastation is incredible. Martial law has just been declared in New Orleans, they're urging everyone to leave as soon as possible, since the water level keeps rising.

    Incredible

Last I heard, no one knows why the city is flooding. There are some breaches in the levees and the pumps aren't working, but apparently that doesn't account for the amount of water that's flooding the city, so they don't know where all the water is coming from.

yeah, the levee broke at about 5 AM today.
this is allowing the water from lake potratrain (sp??) to pour in to the city.
    it's a two block breach!

they seemed to be relatively OK until this happened...

looks like nobody will be living the NO for at least a few weeks...weird.

Maybe it's time to fold and walk away from it. It seems really crazy to rebuild a whole city that is below sea level. when the city started, it wasn't of course, it's sinking. Now that they have an excuse, they ought to just rebuild it further inland.

Global warming is just going to increase the power of these storms we've been seeing the last few years, and the sea level is just going to rise. It makes no sense to build a whole city in such a swamp anyway.

No, this place is the worst for Cable TV I've ever lived. Basic Cable in most places has all those and about 40+ channels total, for about $20 a month, here, all you get is from channel 3 to 21. Channel 3 is Fox, 4, 5, and 6 are some local crap with nothing on them but some static bulletin board crap. 7, 9, and 13, are the 3 networks, and 15 is some independant. 17 and 18 are C-span and 21 is the TV guide channel. All the rest sell cheap jewelry and exercise equipment 24 hours a day.

It's the pits I tell ya.

The only reason I keep it is you got to have basic cable for the 3Meg cable Internet hookup.

There is no such thing as Global Warming. LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-
    LA-LA-LA-LA- I'm not listening LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA- I can't hear you.

Besides, I have it on good authority from Falwell that this happened because God was mad at the Casinos and the ACLU.
    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

On a serious note, I'm hoping all here who have the means are donating to the Red Cross to help out the victems.
This is probably going to turn out to be the costliest storm in our history... so far anyway.

And on an unrelated note, IAW, what is your upload speed on that 3meg circuit?

Upload is about 36K, depending on which server I load to. Download can be as much as 360 or so. That is the figures I see from WS_FTP.

We are going to 5Meg soon, and I asked about the upload speed of that, cause it doesn't seem to matter when it was 512, 1Meg, 2meg, or now 3meg, it was always 35-36K upload no matter the download speed. They told me it was going to 256K Upload, but the bad nes is, the bill will be about $70 a month instead of $40.

I would've thought you'd have advocated a fight-to-the-death policy for what land (waterlogged or not) is rightfully yours.

But if you're OK with half of New Orleans moving in next door to you, then I salute your generosity, sir.

No, it means the military or police are completely in charge. Basically it gives them cart blanch to impose total authority as they see fit.

No, it means looters will be shot on sight. And they aren't kidding, they actually do shoot you. I was in the Marines during the "first" little known about Watts riot, and we were given live ammo and told to shoot on sight, anyone looting. These things of course, do not make the headlines, but you can believe, it happens.

I would've thought you'd have advocated a fight-to-the-death policy for what land (waterlogged or not) is rightfully yours.
land 20 feet below sea level is not land, it's sea bed. Now a very large inland Marina might be something worth building there.

But let's be real for a moment. All human tradgedy aside, the rest of the country is going to have to pay for the rebuilding of New Orleans, and as far as I'm concerned, I would just as soon my tax money not be spent on such folly.

"This is our tsunami," Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway told the Biloxi Sun Herald newspaper, referring to the December 26, 2004, tsunami that killed more than 226,000 people in the Indian Ocean region.
does anyone else find this offensive?
i mean, 226k people died in an instant, without warning...
this is not the same thing...that mayor's PR guy is probably having a seizure right now...
