Greatest albums of all time
I was on holiday with a group of mates recently and we were discussing what we thought the 3 top albums of all time were. After many, many beers and serious debate we (kind of) agreed on the following as the top 3 albums of all time (in no particular order):
Stone Roses - The Stone Roses Read
Radiohead - The bends
Guns & Roses - Appetite for destruction
There were, of course, many others (Pet Sounds, Screamadelica, Blue Lines, Sargent Peppers, Off the Wall, What's going on, Exile on Main St, Revolver etc.. etc..) but we were taking into account, not just how good the album was but what the albums actually meant to us at the time they came out..
Some of you will probably laugh at my top 3 - some of you might agree. Either way, let's hear yours.
And remember - top 3 albums of ALL TIME.. you don't have to drop in some obscure band nobody has heard of just look cool - top 3 greatest albums of all time.
Let's go.

good call on that stone roses record. my crew and i were probably the only people in indiana who bought that album in 1989, but i still listen to it today. a fine piece of work, no doubt. too bad the stone roses imploded (or exploded in their record company's offices!). i'm also down with 'appetite' on this list as well. others to consider:
- Janes Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
- The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
- Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
and just to throw some hiphop into consideration...
- Dr. Dre - The Chronic
- A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
- Beastie Boys - Check your Head
- Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions
Ah, these boys is all swelled up. So this was earlier...getting set to trade. Then, woooaaah differences.

My favorite album of all time is Nirvana's Nevermind. It was the first CD I ever got, I got it when I was about 9. I remember playing Smells Like Teen Spirit over and over again, while my dad yelled "What would Beethoven think if he heard that ****?!". He took me to a Beethoven concert the following week
That CD pretty much defined my musical taste.

OMG!

System Of A Down - System Of A Down
Clerence Clear Water Revival - Best of. (okok, its got some good tracks on it! Bugger off!)

yeah, it's hard to differentiate between 'greatest' and 'favorite' in threads like this. i mean, nats, those are good albums and probably some of your favorites, but are they really 'the greatest'...to everyone? i mean, i think 'pet sounds' is good, and 'kind of blue' is OK, but niether of them are even in my personal top 25. yet they are on my list because without pet sounds, there is no revolver/rubber soul, and without kind of blue, jazz may be as marginalized as bluegrass.
that said, nothings shocking is huge. without it, there's no nevermind

i actually think he's a really good actor when he doesn't try to branch out.
plus, dr. dre has the lion's share of the musical ability anyway.

as much as i like PE and Tribe, i still think The Chronic (as an album) had possibly the biggest impact on its genre than any other album/genre in history. it literally put a fork in the road instructing all acts to come with me, or fade away.

Phantom Flasher...
Yup... couldn't possibly pick... but in there would have to be...
Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Beatles - Sgt Peppers
Radiohead - The Bends
Damien Rice - O
Muse - Showbiz
DaftPunk - Homework
A U2 album
That Jagged little pill one (sorry to let the blokes down, but it has a lot of "hits" on it - I couldn't listen to it now though)
RATM
Loads of dance stuff, Chemical Brothers...
Just too much excellent, amazing music out there to be distilled down to a list of three...

"Boys for Pele" is one album I can listen to over and over (and over). I also really like "To Venus and Back", I think these two albums are simply amazing.
As for other artists, I think "Vendetta" by Zemfira is really good,
and 5NIZZA debut album is also great.
