Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility

Highlight your Hard Drive in the left column, then under First Aid, select Repair Disk Permissions.

Also, check out Cocktail... it has a ton of things, pre-binding, daily/weekly/monthly crons that could also be run via the Terminal, that will rotate out logs, clear unnecessary things... whatnot.

Worthy app, and honestly, I'd look into jumping up to 10.3 at least... such a good upgrade - I'm still running 10.3.9 actually. 10.4 interferred with my work for a little bit, but at 10.4.3, it's back to "stable".

It just takes practice and time. I've been using Photoshop for over 13 years now since version 2.5... and before layers.

Dunno... that's been an odd question asked to me before, and one I can't really answer without some direction of the question.

But the best thing... jump in on some of the open battles in the Arena, such as the Kung-Fu thread, or the others... and then pick up clues and tricks from all of us in the Arena via our critiques - just keep an open mind. We're all there having fun doing stuff that most clients would never pay for... so there's a bit of experimentation going on there too.

Hint #1... avoid filters. They "cheap" an image imho.

Layers, layer application methods (Overlay, Soft Light, et al), levels, layer masks, and all of that are good to know. Only "filters" I use are on a short list:
    • Gaussian Blur
    • Sharpen
    • Variations
    • Noise

That's all I mostly use... really. I use other selections and layers to create highlights, shadows, and big on image and selection calculations.

I have a couple of tutorials over at Graphics.com that show how I don't really use filters other than the aforementioned.

Those two should be just enough for you while starting up. There are some others, of course.
