Are you using MX2004?

Take a look in the program help, there is an extensive section about XML usage.
Flash have over 40 functions, methods and properties in the XML class, what is a lot to be discussed in general lines.

Go to help, then double-click the "Actionscript Dictionary" icon, then double-click the letter "X". Go into the XML sections, reading the scopes and trying to understand the examples.

I suggest you start reading:

XML class
XML.load()
XML.onLoad()
