Microsoft may have made a huge mistake
A few points to cover here all about the XBOX 360:
XBOX 360's Problems
Alot of people's xbox's freeze on them, overheat, and crash at random moments. Complaints Here The problem seems to be with the power supply over-heating.
Their losing 125$ on every box sold
If you think paying $400 for an Xbox 360 is too much than you should know that you are actually getting a lot more hardware than you are paying for, $126 more to be exact. Market researcher iSuppli have done a break down on the cost of all the components used by Microsoft in the Xbox 360 manufacturing process and found that the cost per console unit is $525.
More here The same happened with the original xbox.
Loosing alot of sales
People are getting tired of waiting
"In the first 90 days, I believe we'll be somewhere between two and a half and three million units worldwide. Perhaps equally importantly, by the end of the calendar year [2006], I think we'll be at 10 million units worldwide."
from Here
They only plan for 10 millions units to be sold by the end of 2006, halo 2 sold 9.8 million copies in it's first week, just to give you an idea. So in the end the newer technology in the PS3 looks like it'll be worth it. They are also loosing alot of sales from people who pre-ordered and never got one, and even those who didn't, places like eb games offered people either their money back or they could wait or they could change the 360 pre-order to a ps3 pre-order, and I alone know 10 people who have done so, and thats just friends. Even me I was gonna get a 360, then I hear about all the problems, and find out my odds of getting one before new years aren't to good, so now I also am waiting for the PS3 which will be much more problem free, the only downfall is the boomarang controllers the ps3 has.
Do you think MS may have screwed themselves royally this time?

Everyone looses money on consoles. It's an investment, because they earn a lot from the games!
It was the same with the PSP (the dead pixels) but nobody seems to remember that.

To be entirely honest, I think anyone who will pay even $400 for just the hardware to play a game on is screwing themselves.

lol, you'll understand one day when you're younger.

I doubt it. But those who spend so much time playing games that teach you nothing will understand what a waste it is, when they're older.

I understand what a waste it is now.
And I still enjoy it.

To each his own, but if I was interested enough to play that game, I'd drive down to Wally, go to the games aisle and grab the controller out of some little kids hands and play it. After about 10 minutes I'd have enough of it to last me the rest of my life, which I could then go on with.

people are looking at it at a per machine, per part basis.
that's quite stupid. they get bulk/volume discounts; however they are indeed losing money per machine. Sony lost with the PS2 until 2 years after it's release... after about 4 hardware revisions.
Then Sony releases the slim-line PS2 in a silver color and make it incompatible with some games... go figure.
Besides... they might lose on the XBOX360, but they make pure profit per MS Office sale. I think MS will be ok. Not like Sony... losing nearly a billion dollars last year or so.

Hey, I'm retired and moderating a couple busy forums here is no game. And from reading some of the CL threads, I don't spend as much time here as some others. Certainly not posting on the bosses time.
Still, to pay $400 just for the box to play a game on means to me that you'd have to be extremely boared with real life to devote so much time to a game. I've just never been that bored.

btw... chuckury and ihoss... use the right word. "lose"... not "loose". Thought I'd correct that minor English problem between the two of you.
