The "Flash Bible" is a great book to start with. I said it upon my personal experience, i found this bood a great help as a biginer.

I like Colin Moock's books ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide and Essential ActionScript 2. Neither apply directly to Flash 8 (if you're using it), but both are still very useful and really well written.
