There was NOTHING... thats right NOTHING good about Authorware! Even the interface wasn't designed! It was the most un-userfriendly bit of software I've ever used!

Authorware failed because of the plug-in, not the IDE. There were quite a few computer-illiterate ID folks I knew who had no problem with it. Unfortunately, they had the design sense of Helen Keller.

PAlexC, do you know of any good SCORM packagers / testers? We are currently using one from ADL, but it seems bug filled.

Search the ADL forums, I know someone posted one in response to a thread I started about using the Conformance Suite vs. the RTE. Stick with the RTE, the Conformance Suite is worthless.
There is a bug in v. 1.2.2 of the RTE where cmi.core.lesson_location is automatically set to the course file the system launches when it launches the content. This is a no-no, it should be an empty string according to the documentation. I have a fix for it, you edit one of the java files and recompile the whole thing.
As for packagers, I have 1 imsmanifest file I made a couple years ago using a Manifest Maker extension for DW, I've been copying and editing it by hand every since. (We only do single-sco deployments.) ADL used to put out something, but it was a complete piece of crap. If I had more time to spend on it, I don't think it would be hard to write a PHP or ColdFusion script that would make one. If you've ever looked at the XML it generates, the whole schema is garbage, too much repetitive data and it makes no sense from a structure standpoint.
I have a very, very, VERY low opinion of ADL and the people working there.
I'll post more tonight, we're moving sh*t around in our office today, which is a long and ghetto-ass story in and of itself.

I've been working on software e-learning modules for about, hmmm, a year or so. I've put together a couple pieces, but since e-learning is just trying to spread its wings here... my development projects move up and down the list of priorities. I was new to flash when I started this job, and I wasn't planning on doing this when I was hired, but I'm hooked I admit. Tried using Captivate a bit, but after knowing what could be done with Flash... well, dropped that and I'm doing it all in Flash.
Shotsy247, I visited the site in your footer, looks like a promising forum to discuss all this e-learning goodness... I tried to register but no luck getting through yet. Hope to see you there soon though!

we use captivate to fast-track 'additional' content. especially content that would be best delivered by the actual SME, instead of our usual scriptwriter > narrator > developer process. for instance, we are using it to create the FAQ content for our current project, but all the actual lessons are done in straight up flash.

for the win
I'm also in E-Learning
I use captivate more like a crutch to capture live flash content (whiteboard/video/audio/chat) being generated by a webcast application using flashcom server. I intend to syn all these components up and forego captivate.
I also build social applications.

Captivate is a strange tool. It does a nice job once you get use to its quirks. We use it when our SME's need to produce something really fast, that doesn't need to go on the Web. The files tend to get massive.
dissonance, I'm not sure why you couldn't sign up for LearningProvider.org. I have done some testing and it works fine for me. Perhaps you have a spam filter turned on that has intercepted the registration e-mail. Has anyone else tried to sign up and had errors?
The forum is in its infancy right now, but should prove to be a great resource and community for people like us.

Forget authorware.
I've been working with swishzone's product line for a few years now
(Max studio and video) I just wish they built a screen cap utlilty like hypercam in vid2
Previous to Swish Studio I was using Northcodes SWF STUDIO)All good stuff
I'm amazed at the amount of people who waste time with vb environment. SWF to exe via a good projector tool saves a lot of time.
Right now I'm beta testing a product for swf conversion to dvd/vcd with controls. Whilst you can't data to dvd/hard drive it's a familiar format that works everywhere.

Hi there,
i'm into E-learning for 7 years now (oh my god). Started with Toolbook (Assymetric), a complex and illogical program, but the only tool I knew that could control text, video and Flash in one session. Authorware also was an option, but wasn't a real improvement. Started making flash-animations in Flash 4. Now we build our own CMS and content with Flash and ASP for different server-platforms and databases.
ciao, mark
amazing! getting paid for flashing

I freelance as a Flash developer and most of the good jobs I get these days are e-learning based. Its definitly a good field to be in as it is a booming industry at the moment. I haven't done a website for years and the work is usually alot more interesting as they usually involve creating larger scale applications and/or loads of different little dynamic apps/classes/components.
You also get to learn lots of different things, like how to get some plumbing certification, or how to attack an enemy position, clear mines and survive a biological attack, it's all useful info in my day to day life

Sounds interesting. I wouldnt mind trying one of those projects out. I dont think there are too many places that are developing e-learning out here. None that Im aware of anyway.

Ahhhh, Toolbook! We still have some legacy CBTs that are toolbook based, but to support these CBTs is becoming increasingly difficult. One of our current efforts is to port all of these CBTs to a more stable environment. . .HTML, JavaScript, and Flash.
Lexicon, I know what you mean about learning all kinds of useful life skills. From one of my jobs I learned more about the different types carpet fiber, how it was produced, and it's applications, than I ever thought I would know. Not very useful information for me, but I guess it has a level of interest to it.

It was cool to work on a military base for a while and learn about death and destruction by various means But plumbing, concrete and plastics etc were a bit mind numbing to say the least! At least they had some nice animated stuff to do and some funky little quiz stuff which kept the day ticking over.
Designing/developing overall SCORM based applications that deal with making it all work together kept me amused too.

SCORM is amusing. For a standard, it doesn't seem very standard, but then again what do you expect from the military.
