All this that you say have a valid and appopriate reasoning behind them.. Perhaps i unfortunately might not be able to explain it to you.

but all these points you bring forward related to women are not for the opression of women.


In Islam.. men and women are treated equal.. there are very strict rules for women as well as men which they must adhere to.

These three things you say are definetely in no means against the opposite sex. but it is also diverting from the subject here speaking about men and women rights in islam.

i think this is an important question by itself (without the rest of that post).

i just wonder why there doesn't seem to be a strong feeling of responsibility for moderate muslims to take action against things like this. i mean, the thing that is supposed to be the most sacred in life is being hi-jacked by radicals at the expense of all muslims.

the rest of the world is scrambling around trying to figure it out and the only help they seem to get from the moderate muslims is a bit of head-scratching and q-and-a about the proper following of islam?

Exactly - but its the way the mullahs have twisted the rules to their benefit which shows the religion in bad light... For instance Marrying multiple times... This is allowed when your first wife cant bear you a child - so you can marry the second time round... But people take advantage of this rule by marrying multiple times... I know of Arabs marrying 100's of times...

nope, you can marry as many wives as you want regardless. So long as you can treat them all with equal love and respect and show no favouritism to any of them.

i heard this once on tv.. that the reason behind this is the fact that the female population is much more than the male counterpart and is one of the many reasons why men are allowed to marry upto 4 women.. so the women don't resort to prostitution.

but i guess it is so that all the 4 can be treated equally.. and a larger number might result in a not so good treatment of all..

Your missing the whole point of this question. Unless women are allowed to have 4 husbands also, they are being discriminated against.

Give it time. Hell, women couldn't vote not too long ago here in the states. Different society, different things, different timing.

And the women in that area are gaining rights... there's just no Susan B. Anthony figure yet.

And if you want to go the religious path for justification, according to the Baptist church, as well as most white supremacy organizations, via the Bible, the obscure statement that the sons of Ham, which was the son of Noah who saw him naked, disorderly and drunk were to be the "servants"... thus religious twisting of the words in a holy book to fit a need and reason to surpress somebody.

Actually I don't think that polygyny in Islamic countries shows oppression of women. Polygyny seems to also have biological factors, not just cultural. I don't think it stems from the fact that there are more women than men, but more to do with the fact that men provide protection in nearly every society. And why is that? Men had a head start on being in control, since in the early days brute force and strength was needed, which men have more of.

These days it's not about a man being strong anymore, but financially sucessful. You are a good provider if you have cash. You don't have to be strong, you don't have to be good looking, just be rich and you will land a supermodel.

So, a woman may often prefer to be the mistress, or second wife of a sucessful man, than the first wife of a chump loser. Biologically speaking, two things women care about are being protected and reproducing. Polygyny provides all that, and if emotions weren't involved, you could argue it's a more effective way to organize society. Look at our primate ancestry, none of them are monogomous by nature and neither are humans. Society has placed rules and moral codes on humans to remain monogomous.

Having said that, there are plenty of other things that go on in the Muslim world, that appear as oppression in western eyes.

Prefer is the key word here. And if she "prefers" to not get married at all, does she have a choice? No! Not from all I've read and understand.

In alot of arab nations, women are free not to cover their faces, or wear a scarf and can talk to almost whomever they wish. Alot of women choose to cover their faces.
