Guitars...
Check out this demo for a guitar / bass that can change from fretted to fretless with the push of a lever!
I wish I had $5000 to get one of those. Maybe I should start a thread where I ask how to make $5000 USD.

Pah, it'll sound like shhhh though...

you would lose resonance in the neck. The bass demo didn't sound too bad (with the exception of the dood being perpetually out of tune on the fretless) but I certainly wouldn't buy one.

Couldn't you just get both a fretted and fretless Fender P-Bass and still have $1,500 left over for another guitar?
That's stupid.

Yeah, I wouldn't seriously get one. It's just more of a novelty item. I'd probably spend more time flipping the switch than actually playing it.

i always got my frets removed and inlaid with wood from this local guy. cheap too.

I think fretted generally sounds better for rock. Pearl Jam being the exception here.
Fretless better for jazz / blues / bluegrass / quieter music...
Speaking of basses, bass players, I saw motley crue last night.
Nikki Sixx isn't much of a bass player, but he's a pretty cool rockstar and plays a Gibson Thunderbird, which is a really sweet bass imo.
Tommy Lee rocks though. He's amazing.

i would never use that.. but it's pretty cool.
i could see a much larger use for it in the bass world, that's for user.
I'm seriously considering a good amercian strat for my next axe.

You saw motley crew? jealous!
Had the chance to go see them last year...but I wasn't going for $200 a ticket.

I'm still working on learning the proper techniques for playing the guitar. How does this guy do the part where he's shaking his hand to get the effect? Is he pulling the string left / right, or is he sliding back and forth between frets? video
Someday, I can hopefully do this.
The guy's incredible with what he can do. The sweep picking is pretty cool. You can check out his other instructional video samples here. The "lead guitar" video is insane!

practice enough and you can do anything.

Yeah, I've been doing scales every day (1-4 / 5-8 / 12-15 pattern) for as long as possible. I've definitely noticed an improvement. At first I'd try to play through them as fast as possible thinking I'd get my speed up, but they were incredibly sloppy. I'd often mute strings on accident and catch the fret to create a horrible "plunk" -ing sound. Just taking my time and making sure I position my fingers right has made a world of difference.

It's just his vibrato. He's doing it like a retard.
Check this guy out.

Under the influence
Mmmm nothing better than a good Warrick, I think I am definetely getting one of those next. My friend picked up an old torch (fender jazz copy) which already had the frets removed and then smoothed over, it is amazing, that whining sound you can get from it, get for nice flowing jazz walking as well.

He has risen!
that guy sucks, he's so sloppy and all over the place. And that video is SOOO old.

If that kid really played Canon in D Major, holy cow... Just seems a little fake for some reason. The sound is really clear. Unless he has some really good rack mount gear, I'm calling shenanigans.

Nah, its real... he makes mistakes... He has several pedals on the go... the reverse reverb at the start... and a harmoniser pedal... sweet finger work though
That guy has some talent! Although it sounded like Brian May most of the time!
