Patent covering Flash, Flex, Java, Ajax, and XAML content: Oh my!
A patent has been granted to a relatively unknown California Web-design firm for an invention its creator says covers the design and creation of most rich-media applications used over the Internet. The patent holder, Balthaser Online Inc., says it could license nearly any rich-media Internet application across a broad range of devices and networks.
...
The patent--issued on Valentine's Day--covers all rich-media technology implementations, including Flash, Flex, Java, Ajax, and XAML, when the rich-media application is accessed on any device over the Internet, including desktops, mobile devices, set-top boxes, and video game consoles, says inventor Neil Balthaser, CEO of Balthaser Online, which he owns with his father Ken. "You can consider it a pioneering or umbrella patent. The broader claim is one that basically says that if you got a rich Internet application, it is covered by this patent."

Hmmm, I have a feeling Balthaser Online is going to be disappointed.

When is someone going to review the patent rules, this is getting bloody ridiculous, even if these never pay off.

there is no way this will happen for real. macromedia and the other big companies would pay a lump sum to prevent us from having to pay, as I would stop using flash if I was paying royalites to some company, and I am sure a lot of other people would to. not so much for the fact that I have no money, but on principal.
-
This is bloody stupid!
How can we be expected to pay another company for OUR original designs and scripts?
Not ONLY that, this would mean that we would have to charge our clients an exuberant amount of money for websites or content, that most people would not be willing to pay, JUST in order to cover our costs!!!!
I’m with alty on this, macromedia better step in and stop this from happening, or there will be a whole hell of a lot less developers out there.

Didn't we just go through a farce like this a couple years ago?
I wouldn't get your knickers in a knot over it. It ain't gonna happen.
-
Its too bloody stupid to happen.
They'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they allowed it.

Someone in the patent office really needs to get their **** in one pile and quit hiring these retards who issue patents on public domain content.

That exactly what the patent holder wants. It's extortion. Just like that GREEDY LITTLE WORTHLESS FAT PIG MIKE DOYLE AT EOLAS WHO DESERVES TO BE EATEN ALIVE BY TERMITES IN HELL. But I digress.
Geezer's right, the patent office has no clue what it's doing these days. I'd like to see how this holds up to prior art. And Microsoft's lawyers.

I would have gone with GWB instead of ATG.
I'd love to have the number on that weasle.
Sell it for a dollar to Patagonia.
