I agree though...i think the japanese are really coming up with mastering the guitar. There's alot of them that are amazing...and they love Dream Theater.

I like to do chromatic excersizes and then things using just my ring finger and pinky since they are usually the weakest.

I practiced what John Petrucci calls "Scale Fragments".

They're like... fragments... of like... a scale....

Basically, they are formations of scales that are regularly played in scales:

(In fret # and with notation usually played in. Can be shifted, duh.)

1) 1 - 3 - 5 <- Root, 2nd, Major 3rd
2) 1 - 2 - 4 <- Major 7th, Root, 2nd
3) 1 - 2 - 5 <- Major 7th, Root, Minor 3rd
4) 1 - 4 - 5 <- Minor 6th, Major 7th, Root
5) 1 - 3 - 4 <- Root, 2nd, Minor 3rd
6) 1 - 2 - 3 <- Chromatic (Actually exists in a Hungarian Gypsy Minor Scale)
7) 1 - 4/5 - 8<- The Fabled Triad: Root, Scale's 3rd, 5th

Petrucci recommends you try and "rev" the fragment up and mix it up with others, changing up strings. This helped me out millions with speed and am probably the fastest player in town (In a town of 50,000, that isn't much of a brag).

Oh, just in case you are wondering, John Petrucci is my vote for the best guitarist in the world. I always thought Steve Vai plays noise and the whammy bar.

I was listening to Van Halen I yesterday.

Made me think... I really don't think there has been a guitar god like Eddie Van Halen in a long time...

I am sure you guys are going to come up with some awesome current players to refute me. But if you were around at the time Van Halen got popular... he was and still is just amazing... completely revolutionized blazed trails for rock players. At that time and for many years after there just wasn't anyone who could touch him.

There have been more educated players since him. And many coped his
(well steve hackett's technique) Yet no one has played quite like him.

Unfortunately he has refused to grow. He really hasn't learned a new trick
since the third album. And while (I know there are those who will disagree)
Sammy Hagar was the best thing to happen to the band as far as maturity and composition.

His last album bombed. He should have never been allowed to sit in the engineers seat. It's good that he's taking time out, maybe he'll sober as well as grow up.

Hey, Frets or any other techy guitarist here......

I'm having a problem with one of my guitars. It has a floyd rose bridge. I made the fatal mistake of taking all the strings off of it before putting the new ones on... instead of doing it one string at a time.

So now when i have the strings 'tuned', the bridge sits at a 45 degree angle. I used to remember how to fix something like this...but it's been so long that i don't know what i'm doing any more .

I've tried adjusting the spring tension in the back..but that didn't help at all.

I love this guitar, but the floyd rose is kickin my arse right now. Any help would be appreciated.

I always hated the balancing act.

Tech's actually have a cradle type thing for restringing floyd rose bridges
It is sort of a z shape that slides under the bridge plate.

I'd say. get something sturdy and plastic pull the whammy bar down and slide
it under. Then tune down a full step. Remove your bracing object the strings
and the springs should balance themselves out.

Quite right. Soloing modally was always a struggle for me when I was
simply practicing scales and patterns. Arpeggios help you move thru changes seemlessly so you aren't moving blindly thru the progression.
