Windows XP (legal question)
My parents has two computers (Tiny and emachines) -- both use Windows XP Home.
I need to format the Tiny computer (as it contains a lot of crap including supanet ggrrr!) but no CD.
I am wondering if it is legal to use a Windows XP CD (copied from partition on emachines) for installing on Tiny but use the Product ID on Tiny?

Yeah. As long as you have the key, it's fine. Discs are the same (for the most part. they may have differernt volume labels.), but the license key is the real issue.

From what I've heard it's illegal to have a copy of XP on more than one machine. If you have one XP CD and you install that on 2 machines, that would be illegal...
Well, that's what I've heard and read... somewhere.

Yeah, it you're using the same license key for both, then it's a problem. The keys aren't bound to the disc itself.
So, to review:
GOOD:
Computer 1: (AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAA)
Computer 2: (BBBB-BBBB-BBBB-BBBB-BBBB)
BAD:
Computer 1: (AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAA)
Computer 2: (AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AAAA)

One other problem that you might run into is that every XP CD is not created equally. I planned on doing the same thing last time I formatted and my key would not work with my mom's cd so I had to look around until I found the right one. We ran into the same problem at work when our IT guy didn't keep our disls organized with the serials that belonged to each one.

I'm not that hard to imitate. Just make some random negative claim at Apple or anything else for that matter and then have nothing to back it up.

That was most likely due to the discs having different Service packs.
Windows XP SP1 serial will not work on a windows XP or SP2 install disc
