Never really listened to Mogwai but I saw their last video on MTV2 last night, looks pretty crazy, how's the album?

Pretty good, there's a few great tracks on there (friend of the night - which I think was released as a single, glasgow mega-snake etc...).

It's not as good as some of their earlier stuff, but even an average mogwai album is worth having

I bought it the other day and am very impressed. Honestly I have a hard time listening to The Smiths anymore and have never bought a Morrissey CD, but I really like this new one alot. Great sound and songwriting. The video for his single 'You Have Killed Me' is cool too.

I think the general consensus among friends is it doesn't even compare to You Are The Quarry. The new album is a bit of a letdown.

pretty consistent, like the band itself. Some of the songs don't really start though, sounding almost incomplete. Mush less harmony going on than in Happy Songs For Happy People. It's still a fine album though. Just don't go requesting any of the tracks at your local alt. club; This album lacks serious BPM.

I think it's VERY over-produced. I thought Quarry was too though. I liked it when the band was a little more raw and straighforward. But at least he got some real strings finally, the synthesized ones on Quarry sounded awful.

I think as a whole, the album either grows on you or doesn't work for you. It definitely grew on me, but as a whole it doesn't work, some of the songs are great but work better on their own. The b-sides so far this time around...meh.

I recently picked up Maladjusted b/c I had listened to it when it came out, but never bought it. Again, a grower, but not as bad as I remember it being panned. His voice definitely sounds better now than it did 8 years ago.

Vauxhall/Arsenal are still hard to beat though.

my latest recommendations... some are brand new, one is old...

nords, go check out Tanya Morgan "Moonlighting". It's a group of three dudes, not a female singer like the group title suggests. Murs "Murray's Revenge" is definitely a title that caught me by surprise, went backwards and got Murs "3:16 - 9th Wonder Edition" also was pretty dang good.

The next two are oldies (sorta)... check out Mood "Doom" - Hi Tek did the production and for the most part, "Karma" is the track that sold it for me. Some tracks come off as rather Mobb Deep-ish though at times... layered grunge. Cunninglynguists "A Piece of Strange" is definitely overlooked... DJ Kno lays it down, best track to me was "Since When"... and going backwards, their stuff has always been good, I just sorta discovered them about two years ago with all of the Jay-Z "Black Album" remixes, DJ Kno did the "White Albulum" remixes... by far the best out of that bunch.

I'll stop there... I have about five more that I know of that would be decent for your ear, but Tanya Morgan comes close to Little Brother with a touch of Foreign Exchange... and I'm digging their sound. Murs was... a surprise. I never really liked him on his older stuff, then he hooked up with 9th Wonder of Little Brother, and all of a sudden, I like him. Mood... they were heavily overlooked outside of the Cincinnati scene, I caught them while in Dayton/Columbus years ago on business before Hi-Tek hooked up with Talib Kweli - some of his newest stuff is definite hit-or-miss.

The Sound Providers, Planet Asia, and to a lesser extent (do not play this around the Nordspawn) R.A. the Rugged Man, have all been in constant rotation around the aforementioned and of course my typical MF Doom, De La Soul (don't forget the two AOI releases, Bionix and Mosaic Thump) and Little Brother (The Listening is still better than The Minstrel Show, but Separate but Equal is even better than The Chitlin Circuit)... and I have more to list probably...
