    I greatly simplified the fla
    removed all the extra stuff.
made a button you can reuse to load swf's

removed all the code about big and small file sizes and repositioning
made the play/stop controls align with bottom left of movie whatever size it is

put the volume control in the video player
made it so editing its look should not affect it working

made the status display stuff so it will work anywhere

I suppose it could still use a load progress bar and a scrubber bar.

    Hi mgason,
When I load either of your recent .fla files, I get the message from Flash MX 2004 "FAILED TO OPEN DOCUMENT" I'm very eager to look at your files (as I mentioned in Tues. message) If you're saving the .fla in version 8 of Flash, perhaps my 2004 can't read it?? If so, can you save it in previous version and post again?

MGASON. I have been lurking nearby and downloaded the Frampton preloader. That is pretty impressive. You might want to take a look at my current project - a web page to upload instructive videos and make them available to an interested public. I need some graphics and easily accessed videos to pop out of the digital framework around windows on the front page. I have a lot of work to do. Your preloader really helps get my creative juices stirring.

    OK,
I had the same problem with one, must have accidentally saved as flash8.
I fixed that then opened both in flashMX 2004 to be sure and saved again with new names.
I am replacing the zip files
use the same download links in the old messages

just sent you an email with lots of explanation and a new zip file
will post the zip here too in case someone else is interested.
will attach email explanations as a text file in zip.

this new file has a lot of improvements, mainly updated actionscript layout and syntax.

there is room for plenty more improvement

    To mgason ... mark,
You've given me amazing help. Really appreciate it!!!
Have a question. In the "right" button, you can specify the .swf file to be loaded. Since it ultimately goes to a loadMovie(url, target) statement, I had hoped that I could use an absolute url versus a local relative one. (http://www.xxx.com/zzz since you add on the .swf, that isn't added) I want to retrieve the various .swf files from a different server that I also have space on that gives me better rates for space/download usage, etc.
It does load the absolute .swf but the preloader seems to go on 'tilt' and starts movie immediately, says NaN% of the video loaded.... also, my new speed of download goes to something like 2 (instead of 400)... seems like preloader is assuming file is local on that server? or something? ideas?
    Thanks, Cliff
