    UK and Iran.

Are the british helping the Bush agenda on Iran?

So far the mainstream press states that Iran kidnapped British marines in Iraq
and shipped them off ot Iran.

Granted Iran isn't anyone's friend right now. However I'm more inclined to believe that British marines were caught trying to invade Iran.

the story I have heard is that it is an area of water that is disputed. Iran claims it but nobody recognises it.

Considering the u.s./u.k. has quite a few miles of unpopulated border to cross into iran.. wtf would they take a boat? would be like mexicans invading the u.s. by crossing the gulf to florida.

    It is rather convenient.

The main worry for the moment is to make sure that our men are looked after.

I wonder if the offer of 13 virgins in heaven has been put on the table.

That wouldn't intrigue the lone female captive, but one can't have everything as a POW in Iran.

As for the situation, I reckon Iran's out to stir the pot, no more. They'll be released once their point has been made.

This wasn't an invasion force or some commando raid. The Iranians have done this before, they use the fact that the Iraqi and Iranian waters are very close to cause trouble like this. The British have already said they have conclusive radar and satellite evidence that the team was within Iraqi waters. Trying to get into Iran by boat would be monumentally stupid.

If this was a genuine raiding party they would have been equipped very differently and the Iranians would be showing off that equipment at every single opportunity. The fact that they're not should tell you something about what happened.

I agree, Iran just wants to stir the pot, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to put these guys on trial. Personally I hope the Brits go in and get them back if Iran is intransigent. Much as I like the Iranian people in general, Ahmadinejad needs a swift kick up the arse.

Even though the Iranians were in multiple attack boats and vastly outnumbered and out-gunned the 15 British sailors and marines, an American naval commander in the gulf, lt-cmd Erik Horner of the USS Underwood, expressed surprise that the Brits didn't stand and fight rather than be taken. He said an American group would have been expected to fight back, even though it would have inevitably ended with them all being killed.

I get the feeling Iran is acting by example how easy it is to kidnap officials and soldiers and call them spies, infiltrators, agents or what have you, as the West has done to Iranians in Iraq in the past couple of months.

It would have been interesting to see the world's reaction if the tables were turned, if a dozen iranian soldiers had been caught around Iraqi waters. Undoubtedly, they would have been accused of helping the insurgents, thus labeled terrorists by proxy.

I too stand behind the iranian people, and condone a good arse-kicking for their president - although, the same applies to the british and american prez's

Thats probably something to do with the fact that the British have "rules of engagement" and the US don't, or at least not publically.

It's also probably the reason why the Iranians chose the Brits and not Americans. They don't want a war, just a voice on the international stage and a say in what is going on in the region.

We are not at war with Iran, had we been then I expect ther would have been a certain excange of fire.

Hog wash, the u.s. rules of engagement concerning iran are clearly documented. They act belligerent, we shot down one of their civilian airliners.

Assuming the british have knowledge of this type of prior behavior one would expect that they would not temp fate by crossing a boundry.

I'm pretty sure this was in a TNG episode. The difference was Picard did not cross the disputed boundry in order to maintain an uneasy peace rather be a pawn in a game of escalation.

they were under US command, so I guess it's their game of escalation.

I heard the opposite from someone who was there. According to him, the British were carrying out more destructive operations in cooperation with the US because they know that US actions are being scrutinized more than the other countries involved. He said they would be sitting back under fire, negotiating with lawyers on a radio on whether or not they could fight back and a bunch of British tanks would just show up and destroy the entire building.
