    tropical brightness

...just a couple of pics to brighten your day (if it needed brightening).

I finally bit the bullet and bought my new 100mm macro lense. A bit of weightlifting for a few weeks and I should be able to keep it steady enough to get better results.

One thing I have re-discovered is how important depth of field is with a macro lense...I have any number of tiny little bug pics that have 1/4 of a bug in focus.

Tripod is a must using a macro lens and a shallow dof is tributary to the design of the glasses.
Colors are great here and I am looking forward to see a whole bug in focus

I don't understand how people shoot wildlife macros with a tripod. Tis impossible!

I agree with both ctranter & frex , tripods are a pain for mini wildlife, but it can be done with care and patience...just wish I had mastered it better.

Here is a spider that sticks with the tropical brightness theme ( I am almost happy with the result) -

St Andrews Cross spider - http://www.amonline.net.au/factSheet...rews_cross.htm

The bright part of this guy's body is only about 1cm long and his bite is not harmful to humans.

<edit>I see ctranter beat me to it this guy looks like a piece of aboriginal art.</edit>

    Yah, genus Nephila.

Some species make webs about a meter across, and themselves have about 12cm legspans. A web you definitely don't want to walk straight into

Chris, that Brachypelma mesomelas is spectacular, but all of your spider images are amazing, and that jumping spider looks incredible.

....I feel like taking mine down after seeing your work

Thanks David! The thing is I find, with spiders, it's hard to get them all in focus, due to their size and the shallow dof of macro conditions. That is unless you take a 'top-down' view, in which case you tend to lose the most interesting part - their faces.

If like me you just love sitting down in the garden and watching everything going on there is plenty of opportunities to hone your skills! From the looks of things you've got the hang of it already

Do you have the canon 100mm?

You look like you have it down pretty good to me ...and yes, I finally bought the Canon 2.8 100mm macro...still trying to adjust to the weight when hand-holding.

I also bought myself a cable remote for when I am on the tripod so hopefully that takes away any shutter shake.
