Just downloaded my first DRM-free song from iTunes

Pretty impressed and very happy it's finally happening. Jobs always said he would and they have.

(The song was Yellow by Coldplay, for some reason I don't own it.)

I've got about 150 single songs, 4 albums and a music video that can be upgraded to the new format for £20 apparently, so it's working on that now.

Only downside is they take up twice as much space! I won't be able to fit everything on my iPhone at this rate

They're 256kbps AAC files, Yellow is 8.4 MB. I can't work out the maths, but quite a lot of my collection is from iTunes. It's probably about 2GB woth, so yeah... Wooo...

I just read on another site that they put tracking stuff in their DRM free music so that if you do try to share it they know how to find you.

wannabe they get rid of the drm, but it adds all your account info to the file.

So if you share it and the feds find someone with songs they can go in pick out your account info and go directly to jail. do not pass go. do not collect $200

They doubled the sampling rate... thus the filesize and (more than likely) price increase.

Apart from if you convert the file to another format, then that data is not copied to the new the file.

True but they didn't need to put the tracking stuff in to begin with.

Write an app that changes that personal info to the infos of your biggest private enemy, upload your whole collection to piratebay, wait till the RIAA busts your biggest enemy, profit?

PS: You know, I have all your addresses and a huge iTunes library.

I'm actually working on it right now. Just a few small things I need to fix and one feature I want to add. Btw, I will release a second version that includes a DB with about 200'000 stored feed items, in case someone does'nt want to start from zero.

If man can make it, man can break it. When will these people learn?
Any bets on how long until a non-drm scrubber is released?

That extra 31 cents? Apple profit. You can buy from iTMS and NOT buy an iPod, Jobs wants his cut.

iPod full from the bigger files? Oops, time to buy a bigger one.

Still, kudos to Apple for getting a major label to sign on to non-DRM'd material.

looks like the new version of iTunes has some other DRM functionality built in...specifically code that eliminates the easy ability to remove the apple DRM by burning a CD then ripping it.

while cumbersome, the "buy-burn-rip-to-MP3" workaround has been the primary way to start with a 99 cent iTunes download and end up with an unrestricted MP3 that will play on your Squeezebox, your non-iPod portables, or your MP3-enabled DVD player (it's not about "piracy" -- if that was your bag, you'd have started by downloading the song as an MP3 from the myriad P2P options).

So iTunes users who have an existing library of songs purchased from the iTunes Store may want to consider doing their conversions before they "upgrade" to iTunes 7.2. (Sure, you can "upgrade" some of your DRMd songs to the "DRM-free" higher-quality AAC format for 30 cents each, but remember that this is not currently an option for the vast majority of iTunes tracks.)
