Looking for animation ideas

I will be putting together an animation that illustrates an industrial process of taking solids (garbage, dirt, etc) and separates the solids from the water. The part I'm specifically putting out there for help on is possible ways to show the solids moving along a conveyor belt and then changing direction as it "falls" off the edge of the coneyor into a hopper. It's that change of direction part that kind of has me stumped. It needs to somehow appear as dry solids, not liquid.

Any ideas?

Can the conveyor belt be a kind of "wall of death" cone, where centrifugal action spins off material of different densities at different heights? Or maybe the conveyor belt can tilt gently sideways at some point, so that heavier material gravitates downwards? Maybe all the material is tipped from the conveyor belt onto a giant sponge; the sponge soaks up the water, and the heavier material is scraped off the surface?

That's three ideas for you!
