How to make this impressive ripple effect?

I know it may sound like a newbie question but what is the best way of making an impressive ripple effect like this:

The water effect after the ripples is probably the map Displacement filter, but I want to know how to make good ripple effects. i was thinking about using after effects, but obviously file size is an issue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hmm...hard to say. Most of the really good (realistic) ripple effects I've seen have been video, just a few frames (maybe 20) of the video exported as stills and then optimized and re-used.

This looks more like vector shadows & shapes with some nice gradients on there...I'd have to look at it frame by frame to get a better idea...
