How to clean up pencil drawings in Photoshop?

Since it always takes me several attempts to find lines, I have a lot of rubbed-out debris around my drawings, which is picked up quite visibly by the scanner.

Since erasing these smudges and creases manually with the brush tool is a bit of a pain, I'm wondering if you guys know a better way? I found that a High-Pass filter picked up exactly the lines I wanted, but of course this came out as dark grey lines on a grey canvas. I couldn't find a good, clean way of turning this back into black/graphite lines on a white canvas.

So, your opinions on how I should do it? I can post pictures of the scan in question if this is a situation-based thing.

Yeah, it's a situation-based something but usually... if you turn your document to Grayscale then play around with the Levels, you should get things quite sharp... in the worst case, you must use the eraser on some spots too... I usually play around with the Levels and that kinda gives the effects but if you really want to clean it up then you'll need an eraser too...

The problem is, playing with levels (if I recall correctly) only reached the right colours at the point where it made the outlines horribly jagged.

There's got to be some way with linking layers, using layer masks or blending modes to make the high-pass image print onto a canvas, I'm sure of it, but I simply don't know Photoshop well enough.

I'll try and post the scan tomorrow (deleted the original from my computer once I'd cleaned it up, but I can still get it back), in case that helps.
