Human brain has 10tb of memory?

was surfing around the innerwebz and ran across this at Engadget:

Just to show off, Hitachi's Yoshiro Shiroishi pointed out that the human brain has been estimated at (only?) around 10 TB.
Where the heck did that number come from!?

I would also like to know how they came up with that figure.

Stumbled upon this yesterday, thought you might find it interesting:

the only way i think you could ever find out how much memory a person has is to open a word document, and type... every single thing you know, every name, every number, every place, every memory, everything. for anything you can close your eyes and see insert a picture of a quality equal to how you are able to see it.
save it, right click properties and check the file size.

which is impossible as memory is triggered from all sorts of inputs. I have things stored in my memory that are deep in my memory that only come out when I am reminded by some external stimulus. Also that would only be the memory that is taken up not the capacity.

Probably bigger... she has to remember where your keys are at, your wallet, and all of the things you have done wrong...

Considering that I can't even remember what I had for dinner last night, 9.9TB of my brain's memory must be corrupt.

I dont even know my own home phone number.

I reckon my memory is more in line with that of a Commodore 64...

Alotta users on there talking about how much memory you would use in a day, some people seem to think your mind stores the video footage and then you play it back. I think it would be the equivalent of jotting down some notes in your mind which are specific to that memory (what were we talking about. where was I?) and combining it with stuff you already know and it just you're general knowledge (what the person looks like, if it was in your house then what colour the walls are etc) then it's rebuilt on the fly. If it was actually storing video it wouldn't make any sense because when I remember conversations I can't easily focus on all parts of the room.

This comment made me laugh aswell:
"I'd only told them the truth. Was that so selfish? Our integrity sells for so little, but it is all we really have. It is the very last inch of us, but within that inch, we are free."
