Lively - virtual world by google

Google launched its own browser-based Virtual World earlier today. Christened Lively, the browser-based service is an add-on that allows users to customize avatars and create virtual worlds. According to Google, it will provide users a richer social experience compared to Gtalk.

Although not directly comparable to the well-established Second Life, new entrants services like IMVU (www.imvu.com), the soon-to-be launched Rocketon (www.rocketon.com), and Lively, are expected to kick off the battle for Virtual World supremacy. However, all three have a long way to go before they reach the sophistication and features offered by Second Life.

I still think second life sucks. I really really don't get it.

Maybe people will actually go outside now.

It's probably because people are playing SL in SL.

Now once they make a gta type game with the entire us map based off google earth, then ill be excited.

    SL is bullsh*t.

My boss was convinced it would be the wave of the future for remote employees, working in a virtual office.

Because launching a hungry 3D app, over my word processor, to "virtually" walk down the hall to a co-worker's office, instead of just clicking on their name, is so much better.

IBM has been experimenting with it, but frankly, even for virtual classrooms, it sucks.

If you're a fat, basement-dwelling nerd accustomed to WoW, be my guest.

Let's put it this way: as an employer, I let my people work from home because supposedly it's more efficient for them.

Why would I want them wasting their time dicking around in a virtual office?

Even though I admire google's active part in pushing new technology all the time, I totally agree. Just send an email and save the sci-fi bull for the movies.
