Wow, what did I just watch in the 200m!? Phelps won by a tenth of a hundreth of a second. Technically, that other guy had to have had his hand on the wall first, but just didn't press the pad in hard enough.

equestrian is on right now and i must say i can't BELIEVE this passes as something you can earn a medal in. And it's not the obstacle course, its seriously just trotting around a rectangle. The only skill that should be awarded is how they were able to get their horses to china.

They were just showing that Phelps now has more gold medals than many countries have won in the entire history of the Olympics.

Wow. Did you see the 100m? Usain Bolt ran at 9.69 and new world record. And he "celebrated" the last 10 meters. I believe that he could have run at least 0.05 seconds faster if he didn't!

Apparantly today was one of the most intense medal winning days for Britain since the Olympics began. I'm pleased to hear it but I also do not give a s**t.

Seriously, I flick over to the olympics when watching TV and it's great entertainment. But at the same time, I don't really care.

If Spitz is smart, he should use the situation to become relevant again... a passing of the torch type of transition.

why "poor mark spitz"? He held the record for almost 30 years. That's quite a long time to hold a record. Like gerbs said, he's become relevant again because of phelps.

wow, so based on our US medal bonuses ($25,000 per gold), phelps has earned $200,000 for his 8 gold medals and another $1,000,000 from Speedo for breaking spitz's record. And with his now 14 gold medals, and 2 bronze, that equals $1,370,000. This is for the Olympics alone, I wonder how much more he's won in other world championships over the years as his actual medal talley is at 48.

And who knows what he'll be earning with endorsements for the next 4 years or more after the games are over.

Right. But what of his life after the Olympics and endorsements? Again... this is where Mark Spitz is relevant. They tried like hell to capitalize form his name, but they really didn't do well.

I'm quite sure he's learned from that mistake and can give Phelps an idea of what will happen in the future if he does it wrong.

A million doesn't go as far as it used to...

endorsements in the 70's were handled much differently than what they are today. Just the shear amount of coverage this has had on the net, on every single news channel and everywhere else will guarantee he comes out much better than spitz ever had. Plus as we've seen from every major athlete (and even celebrities) who has a brain, if the endorsements aren't coming in as they should, create your own with clothing lines, sports drinks, sports foundations, and much much more.

And i agree with the amount of money. It's definitely not staggering compared to professional athletes and what they make EVERY year.

    - You bet he could have run faster !!! Asafa Powell was left gasping for breath in 4th place and Tyson Gay did'nt even qualify for the Finals. Quite a pity !!! Usain has certainly come as a Bolt from the blue !!!
200 metres race is on today - it should be a cakewalk for him.
