The United States is suddenly faced with the uncomfortable scenario of confronting the very same weapons and military hardware, including F-16 fighter jets, it has armed Pakistan with for decades.

The unsavoury prospect of having to take a crack at the its one-time ally has surfaced most starkly in the skies over the Afghan-Pakistan border this weekend after the Pakistan Air Force deployed its US-supplied F-16s to challenge the violation of its airspace by US drones, and in one case, an airborne assault that landed US Navy Seals inside Pakistani territory.

Perhaps Pakistan should worry more about what's going on inside of their own borders rather than worry about drones flying into them.

Just watched a Frontline special on Pakistan's "cooperation" with the U.S. after 9/11. Considering their current political climate and the loyalties of their military leaders, it'd be a miracle if they don't fall into civil war. Which, a common enemy (say, the U.S.), helps unite people against.

That said, we don't sell military hardware to countries like Pakistan that we can't dominate. If you're not England or a NATO ally, you get stripped down aged goods. A handful of F22's would dominate Pakistan's air force before those F-16's knew they were there.

Pakistan's not stupid, they're using a little anti-American sentiment to get political support to keep from tearing themselves apart, and I don't blame them. In fact, given their nuclear capability, I'd prefer they do a little harmless sabre rattling. Knock down a couple of drones if it makes you feel good, there's no pilots to worry about. It's all for show.

I hate to be all rah-rah America, but if there's one thing left this country can do right, it's dominate the air. Now, if we could just get American auto-makers to be half as competent, we'll be on our road to recovery.

- After knowing what Pakistan is upto - US are still giving them the technology which in turn will be used against them. Cant they learn from their previous mistakes of arming the Mujhideen which became the Taliban ?

I'm pretty sure that we waited until our air-to-air missile technology had effective ranges of 100 miles before selling them the models with effective ranges of 50 miles. Who do you think would win in that conflict of heat?
