Smile background in flash CS 3

I am taking a flash class, and my teacher tells me that I should make a separate layer, and use that for my background instead of using the background in the properties inspector.

My question if everything gets compiled to the swf file why is this necessary??
    Thanks,
    Johnny

^It is just for the sake of keeping the flash file clean so it is easier to edit.

NOTE: You shouldn't have to many layers either, more like

    Main Stuff
    Background
    Sounds
    Actions

    and not

    Main Character
    Enemy1
    Enemy2
    Boom Sound
    Bang
    Gun
    Trees
    Terrain
    Some Actions
    Some more Actions
    A bit of a background
    More Backgrounds
    Last layer of Backgrounds

    Hi pseudobot,
    Thanks for your help`-`
Yikes, looks like I need to tone down my layers. Thanks so much for your help. A friend in my class actually asked me why I had layers for everything. Told me to have layers for a reason, as if you don't need them don't use them.

I also learnt about copy the last few frames of a scene and copy them into your next scene so you don't have a stop in the animation. Flash is cool`-` He also told me to not have scenes if you don't need them too.

I just got Flash CS 3 Bible, and I will be reading this this weekend. Not sure if it is the best flash design book, but it looks cool. The library at school had it`-` I am into flash animation, and I am working on a cartoon about turtles.

Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it so much`-`

    No prob.
Anyway, he is definitely right about the scenes. Whenever possible, don't use them. They are very unreliable.
