    Where does Macromedia Fireworks fit in?

    The best I can figure is Fireworks is applicable when an author needs a detailed movie or other short piece of content preferably in vector form.

    I would be most thankful if anyone could correct me if I'm wrong or fill in the gaps if I'm on the right track.

    Well it can do what you describe but that would not be a description of it that could be described as accurate.

    Macromedia was eaten up by Adobe 3 years ago, see the Adobe website for a full description:
