    "@Squize&Render, am I under attack ?"

No not you, just what you're saying

The core principle of this competition is for people to learn from others. That's why there's a request for the source code if you want to be eligible for a prize.
If you share your code for the good of the community, great, you've got the chance of a prize almost as a thank you for doing so.
If you don't want to share your code, 'cause you've got one eye on sponsorship, or ads, or making a bigger better game, then ok, but it's hardly in the spirit of the comp. ( And therefore shouldn't really be eligible for a prize ).

Looking at it another way, this worry that anyone will have an idea so good, that they can convey it so well in 4k, the others will be queuing up to take that idea and improve it and therefore make money / take the credit for the original authors idea.
If it's your game, you're going to have a head start in expanding on it over and above the 4k limit with a view to selling it.
If you are going to improve the depth of the game to increase it's earning potential, then to be honest your 4k code isn't going to be the best basis to do that from, you'll be better off starting again, using as3, using oop etc.

Mate, at the end of the day it's a bit of fun, a bit of a challenge to see what we're all capable of with a tight restriction. I'm entering and I'll be open sourcing my code, even though I can't even win a prize ( And I'm paying $50 so someone else can have a prize ) as I think these things are good for the community.

If you think your game may get 810,000 hits in 2 years then don't share the code, ok ?

If you've put together a legitimate game, then you get to put whatever you want along side it, including links back to your site... whatever you like.
In that case I better get started on a explanation of my code. See if I can make it easy enough for a complete newbie to understand.

I know submissions aren't open yet, and excuse me if I'm missing something but how will we enter the competition and get our games to you? I'm imagining putting the source code or .fla and the .swf and a readme.txt into a zip then emailing it to you. Is that how it will work?

It'll go in a zip and get submitted via post to keep it anonymous. I'll be setting that up in the next week or so.

@squize, despite my 4K idea is strongly inspired (stolen?) from another game, having a nice inspiration desn't happen very often (to me at least). So you might be right but I'm still worried about releasing the source code to the wild world. I don't say I will not release the code but I've not yet decided. If it's not in the spirit of the comp, that would have been clearer to not accept submissions without source code.

wow....i think we have lost the plot a little if your worried about making money on a 4k game....

to me this is like being a kid again i love it, like we all go to school or something and go home and make something awesome and bring it in for show and tell and the winner gets some ballin prizes just for being cool ass! come on do you really care for that like 10 bucks you could make off this?

oh well, question though, if we do make more then one game can we submit them anyways as non-entries just to share in the spirit? because i think even if its not prize eligible you can still pick up lots of neat little tidbits and design concepts.

and is cs4 allowed :O its all ive got?

  7. #107
abseeley: Just make sure you designate your other entries as being non-competitive entries and I'll post them up too.

Flash CS4 should be able to save a Flash CS3 compatible fla. So you should be good, just make sure you save it correctly.

Is using haxe or some other not-strictly-actionscript method of producing the swf acceptable? Haxe in particular seems to fit well in the rules as it is handled natively by FlashDevelop.

Seems fair as long as the swf is under 4k

Haxe isn't allowed unless Flash Develop has native support that I'm unaware of. Just port to AS2/AS3 if you want to develop initially in haxe.

FlashDevelop DOES have native support for haxe. The only thing you have to do is get the haxe compiler and point FlashDevelop to it. Just like the flex sdk.

  19. #119
you could also generate as3 from the haxe code:

Mostly, I just wanted to play with alternative compilers to see which produced the smallest output. But an empty "new haxe project" in flashdevelop produced a 3071 byte file. So I don't think I'll be going that way.
