you like video game stores because?
what kind of merchandise would make the ultimate game store for you? I ask this because I recently, yet randomly became the manager of a video game store and want to turn this ship around, right now its not doing to well and I feel its mainly due to the lack of being unique. What would do you think would make a game store stand out from the rest of gamestops?
the store I work at is a franchised based Play N Trade.
we currently sell modded xbox 360 controllers from gamermodz.com and also carry white ps3 controllers from japan, but thats the only thing that makes us different.
do import games entice you?

FK's Official Mac Hater
If it's anything like the Play-N-Trade here then the prices need to be fixed. I went in there a couple of months ago and they were asking $50-$60 for used Wii games.

I'm not that hard to imitate. Just make some random negative claim at Apple or anything else for that matter and then have nothing to back it up.

I don't know if there's much science to a game store beyond prices and location. But, maybe I'm out of the biggest demographic now.

EVP would be the resident expert He'll tell you nothing you need to know if he sees you as a competitor

Regular tournaments.
Getting people in the door is the first step, tournaments is the way to do it. Having parents watch thier kids play with other kids and seeing the competitive side of it is a good way to get them to make a purchase. instead of thinking they are sitting in thier rooms being anti social they will see that there is a chance they are actually talking to real people.

Famitsu magazine - limited quantities only, not all geeks love struggling trying to read Japanese - and other things.
A White controller? How much? I'll be your first FK purchase if it's priced right
There's a few places, EVP's store included, that I would buy from only if they knew the games. Can't sell me anything if I know more than you.

Every time I got into a game store I am always reminded that there are so few games I actually want to play, so I always come out empty handed. I want a challenging, simulation/strategy game, in 2D, for PC, that isn't crap.

Very small market.
One would be better off to build and sell tupperware game controllers.

There are 2 retro games stores in my area that I browse frequently. I think I've only purchased a few things from them.
The problem is that they are way overpriced and the selections are usually small.
Retro game purchases have moved over to ebay where they probably belong. It's too small of a market to cater to a retail store, thats why EB/Gamestop just got rid of that inventory.

Strange industry. Plenty of violence almost no porn.
Turn it into an avatar bar like the CSI: NY episode.
Sell costumes at the place next store like cosplay house
Now there is a place I'd like to get drunk at.

we hold tournaments, we sell retro games, we have girls hang out everyday that do the cosplay thing (though not dressed as...only talk about), and we don't sell PC games.
I'm thinking that the economy is being hard on the game retail business.
