    DBMS for non-programmers

Not sure what to title this thread. Basically, I'm looking for a replacement for a Mac application called Helix.

In short, it is a database management tool that allows non-programmers to create database tables, specify the connections between them and then create forms / applications that can be used to enter rows into the tables. The tables can then be searched.

Any ideas of another program like this? Preferably for Mac OS X?

Are you looking for something like Filemaker Pro?

I'm not that hard to imitate. Just make some random negative claim at Apple or anything else for that matter and then have nothing to back it up.

Hello! Yasu was asking this question for me and I'm looking for a (free) program for XP... Something I can use to create a database as well as forms for editing and searching it.

    Thanks!

Microsoft Access isn't free but I believe it does what you want.

What database(s) are you hooking into normally? I absolutely hate MS Access.

The best answer is no database. Right now I have a couple of spreadsheets that I want to convert into something I can share that is a bit more sophisticated with more options for displaying queried information.

So you want a database application that doesn't use a database?

It's far from perfect, but it gets the job done most of the time, and has drivers so you can throw it on the web if you need to in a pinch.

    There's also Base in OpenOffice.org

I do want to use a database, it's just that the database has not been created yet. I wasn't sure how to answer gerbick's question because I don't normally hook into any databases / am equally unfamiliar with all of them.

    Base looks really promising...

I had some trouble getting different tables connected correctly, but now have some nifty forms set up in Base and am entering info!

I've been using MySQL-Front for the last month for my MySQL databases, and for Microsoft SQL Server, just still use Enterprise Manager.

I've been collecting music from a couple of TV shows and wanted an easy way to keep track of what songs I have. And since I have the information, I also wanted to be able to search, for example, for all songs played in a particular episode or all episodes featuring a particular artist.

Ned, isn't Base overkill for that? But, hey if it serves you, then its good.

    I suppose...but it's been a good exercise.

    ah, you needed a spreadsheet.
The spreadsheets I had were getting cumbersome and I don't know enough about macros or advanced search options to get the output I wanted.
