How long before "whatchu talkin' 'bout"
Starts appears on cardboard signs above the new name: http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/07/16/sea...med/index.html ? What's next, the Empire State building to the Rebellion Building?
How many non-American posters have heard of the Sears Tower?

Sears Tower is really well known - it was tallest building in the world for a while wasn't it?
-
only know about it from diagrams - you know, the ones comparing tallest towers and buildings of the world.

"La Torre di Alfa Romeo" does have a nice ring to it.

Crap, does that mean it's going to start to lean?
This whole Sears Tower debacle is just more proof that American businesses and investors know the price of everything, and the value of nothing. We'd sell the naming rights to our own grandmothers.

Bleh Office buildings are going for pennies on the dollar right now. I don't care if they want to call the sears tower Britney Spears. Athough I will say that's got to be one of the stupidest advertisement investments I've ever seen.

well, it's not like the name "Sears" has any significant, cultural meaning to anyone in the US. It's just the name of a company where you go to buy a refrigerator.
When "Mile High Stadium" in Colorado was renamed to "Invesco Field", people were pissed, rightfully so because the original name was unique and not based on a blatant brand.
But if the "Pepsi Center" were renamed to the "Coca Cola Center", would anyone care? Probably not. The only reason people are pissed is because "Willis" tower sounds retarded.

Have a look at their website...

Gotta be one of the ugliest sites I've seen in awhile. They probably paid over 100k for it too.

There was a time when Sears probably did have a bit more cultural meaning. At one time it was the largest retail company in the world. You could buy a car, a tractor. a sub machine gun through the sears catalog.

People call things what they like, there's nothing they can do about it.
If I said to you have you heard of 30 St. Mary Axe, you probably won't know what I'm talking about, but if I said to you the "Gherkin", you might think of this.
But I think they've given in on trying to keep it's real name, as even their website's title is 30 St Mary Axe - The Gherkin.

Much ado about nothing.
Anyone remember When Marshal Fields bought out Hudson and they promised the hudsons name would remain? Wasps in the hills (Bloomfield Hills MI) cried bloody murder while Chicagoans laughed. Then a few years later Marshall Fields was aquired by Macy's.
Wealthy Chicagoans were enraged and cried from the rooftops over the name change. Roger Ebert went on a media blitz to any show that would have him whining about the name change.
Also I don't recall Gibson making a fuss when B.B.King named his 335 Lucille. I don't recall a fuss when the City of East Detroit had it's name officially changed to Eastpointe aside from some stuffy Grosse Pointers.
