"Cheat Code" - Order of buttons clicked

I have a game controller on the cover of the book on this page:

I want to track the order of a series of clicks (like a cheat code) on the controller (such as Left - Right - Top - Top - Bottom) to perform a function. I'm not sure where to start with the Actionscript. I've created four buttons over the controller buttons, what code would I insert into each of them, and how would I use code to track the string/series of clicks to unlock the code when reached?

I am using Flash CS3 with Actionscript 2.0.
