This is the year of the Palin clones.

Why is it that the politicians that wrap themselves in God and the flag, and run on protecting The Constitution, either know nothing about it, want to change/ignore what it says, or both?

Can you imagine what would happen if the 1796 Treaty of Tripoli happened today?
You know, the one that states, "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,"...
The one that was handed to every Senator, and then read aloud on the floor of the Senate, before receiving a unamimous vote of agreement by 100% of the Senators and then signed by the President?
The one that was also printed in its entirety in the newspapers of the day without causing any public outcry or dissent?

If something like that happened today, half the Senate would walk out in protest, FOX Noise would be screaming bloody murder 24/7, and there would be riots in the street by the very people who watch Glen Beck and pretend to know everything about the Founding Fathers and The Constitution.

I seriously blame the public education system for this.

People laugh, but I got the impression she was coached to say exactly what she said. The way she takes the laugh is like it's an affirmation of something she knew, that he didn't. Remember, the nutbag right likes to parse the first amendment as not specifically "separating" church and state. They don't consider, for instance, the 10 commandments in a courthouse to be establishment of a state religion. Bear in mind, these people are literalists who also believe that Revelations is a factual account of events to occur in the near future. I'm afraid this crazywoman has it right as far as the tea partiers are concerned. I can just hear them howling along with her on the AM radio.

I do listen to rightwing AM talk radio all day long, and I can confirm that your speculations are correct.
According to the talkshow hosts and their christofascist wingnut callers, all of those law students and scholars (who have studied Constitutional law) don't know the real meaning of the Constitution like O'Donnell does.
They firmly believe that since the actual phrase "Separation of church and state" does not appear verbatim, then the concept must not apply.
They also believe that the First Amendment is only supposed to protect the church from the state, and not vice-versa.
Apparently when Jefferson used the term "wall of separation" he actually meant a "oneway door"...

Jesus. Why? I used to do that sometimes when I was driving a lot, out in the sticks where there's no NPR or even CBS. It'll warp your brain. I have a lot of problems with dogma from the left, too; they're both corrosive in different ways. But I don't hear the panicky, borderline-calls-to-violence coming from Amy Goodman, for instance, that I used to hear over the AM airwaves when I was in America.
The last time I was back, driving from LA to Vegas on "day one" of the swine flu "outbreak", I caught that Savage character on the radio telling his listeners to "keep away from Mexicans." It reminded me of the beginning of "Hotel Rwanda." Not a nice group of people.

Seriously, I like to hear both sides.
It helps me to understand why the other side believes what they do.
I also like factchecking the propaganda.
Every now and then I find a nugget of truth mixed in with the fear and lies that I wouldn't have discovered otherwise.
Unfortunately for the millions of parrots in the rightwing zombie brigade, those moments are very few and far between.

Also, I'm on the road all day and the lone leftwing radio station in the entire South Florida market was taken off the air by the corporate masters after Obama won.

Yeah, lone leftwing stations, Air America et al have really taken the hammer in the last few years. I agree with hearing both sides, knowing your enemy, etc. I wish to hell there were some just-plain-facts news sources these days. I live in France now so when I get the US news it's always online or from the IHT/NYT, but I felt this way even when I was there and had cable. I used to watch Headline News before it got bodysnatched by a bunch of freakish plastic surgery victims yapping about kidnapped babies. That happened overnight, it seemed.

Is it too much to ask that ONE channel have a Walter Cronkite just READ THE DAMN NEWS now and then? I'd even settle for a Dan Rather or Tom Brokaw. (Jennings is where I draw the line).

So instead of hearing facts from anybody, I have to go ten different places to piece together a half-assed picture of what's actually going on in the world. Left to right I'm forced to run the gamut, from Al Jazeera to the BBC, to NBC, the NYT, Homeland Security Newswire (amazing, btw, if you want to hear what the police state is thinking from their own mouths), Fox (yes...shudder) and then get into the real wacko stuff like Prison Planet. For a bigger picture I read Arts & Letters every day and the Economist. And try to avoid news outlets that draw me into arguments with fundamentalists on any given side, which I have an irresistible -- even pathological -- addiction to, once they get started.

    It's a goddamn nightmare.

Great site Frets. I would never have found out about hic-up girl being a murder suspect otherwise.

Oh my God, Frets, I think you just saved me like two hours a day for the rest of my life, plus every evening's discussion about whether we're gonna go left or right tonight. Dude. I should buy you a bottle of scotch.
I had no idea anyone was doing that. Brilliant.

BTW - this is one of my all-time favorites as far as getting it from the horse's mouth. Sample article:
    http://homelandsecuritynewswire.com/...illance-scheme
Very no-frills, I have no idea who reads it but based on the ads they run I imagine it's higher-ups in the TSA, DHS, etc. Also I've figured out some amazing defense stock picks after googling various things they've hinted at.

ps. there's no contradiction in reading Prison Planet and buying defense stocks... is there?
