    Photographic Portrait Prize

    http://www.npg.org.uk:8080/photoprize/site10/index.php

For those that live in/around London.

I went last year and was blown away. Seeing these amazing portraits printed up big really made me want to get into portrait photography. Also makes you realise how cool stuff looks when it's printed big.

    I'll be going.

Like I said over on FB I went to that gallery quite a few times and caught the Annie Leibovitz exhibit while over there. Incredible seeing stuff printed HUGE.

Yeah - I got the book from last year - it's great but, for some reason, when prints go beyond say A3 or A2 they take on a much more artistic quality than when printed on A4 or smaller.

Some of the photos are obviously very arty and well shot. Others have a quality about them that only comes to life when printed big.Take this for example:

    http://www.theartsdesk.com/images/st...Neal_Kirke.jpg

This was from last years prize - to look at on the web it doesn't look much but when you see it printed big and hanging in an art gallery, it looks great. It's still a good photo though - the light is good and the image is clear.

    Some other great shots:

    And this one:

link to vaguely adult content but its arty rather than rude

This was in the exhibit that was up while I was there.

The 2nd place winner- An amazing portrait. Seeing it printed big in the gallery was breath taking.

    love that one ^^

I went today and was rather unimpressed by most of the 'winners'; a bit bland and uninspiring. That's not to say there weren't lots of excellent ones, there were, but I thought the judges decisions were a bit odd.
